Guys what would you put the x3 up against head to head, my dad is looking at getting something 08+ that's easy to get in and out if with low enough tax, reliable and a few creature comforts, I'm trying to drift him over to an x3 and its ticking all his boxes except on price, what else should he be looking at, he doesn't want ranger rover or x5 as my mum thinks there too big for her to manage anymore.

Well what's an x3 beater in diesel?

Almost anything is better an X3. Have you ever been in one? Interior is truly horrible, with hard touch plastics all over. They're ugly too. Why anyone would want one I don't know.
    Honda CRV.
Subaru Forester boxer d. My choice.
    Freelander?

Newer model Kia Sorrento might be in budget? Much nicer than an X3 why h aren't supposed to be the most comfortable from what I have heard.

Hadn't a clue what the X3 was like was going to go look at some tomorrow, I presumed with the price tag they were the best of the bunch. Better give them a wide berth.

I drove an xtrail before and though it was nice enough, is that replaced by the Quashi?
Just spotted the VW Tiguan looks like a nice SUV I may get him to look at one along with the Honda.

He likes the x35i, the VW looks a lot nicer.

The Nissan Qashquai is more of an elevated hatchback whereas the X Trail is more of a proper 4x4. I'd steer him towards a Qashquai tbh as he should find them easy enough to get into and be reasonably low on tax and fuel economy while being fairly reliable. :)

So you tried steering him towards something you had no clue about?

Username = win in this case :pac:

    What about a Ford Kuga?

Pretty decent I think, though the one had for a few days was a commercial

ix35 is a very nice bus. Herself's mother has one in 4WD. Half leater, 17" Alloys, keyless entry and start, bluetooth, climate control, 5 year warrenty which is a big plus I feel. Will be plenty of change left from the budget.

Definitely worth a test drive I'd say.

Rear passenger legroom is disappointingly tight in the back of the Kuga. Qashqai is really just a hatchback with higher ground clearance and driving position, majority of Irish ones are 2wd also. Trying to find a diesel Subaru Forester will also be difficult as the diesel was only available in the current model. Kia Sportage is worth looking at, sister car to the i35x, a bit better packaged but they are still a bit expensive second hand.

Try a skoda yeti too, parents are on their second one. If you dont mind the look of it (i hate it) then its a grand yoke to drive. Cheap to tax etc.

Toyota Rav4 is also another option. iirc they come in 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2
Was on the hunt for one last year.

What about Volvo XC60 or XC90? You are looking for a counterweight to X3 after all.

However, if you want to go for something different that not many people would go for check out the new Subaru XV:

The Kuga is more expensive to buy and run than than ix35, sportage or qashqai for what is the same amount of car.
Same goes for the Rav4 which is also very dated in this company.
