Noisy brakes

    Hi!
When I start my car after it has been off for a while, when I use the brakes they make a grinding kind of noise, but when the car warms up and I have driven for a few mins the noise stops?
Any ideas what it could be?
    Thanks.

Sounds like an issue with the calipers.
The callipers are the things that presses the brake pads against the dics to slow the car down.
Sometimes they need to be taken apart and greased up.
Does the car pull to any side when driving? When braking?

Or it could be the brake pads. A mechanic will know.

A tiny bit to the left maybe but nothing dramatic? Would the calliper be something that'd need to get done straight away or will they last a while?

Depends what you mean by "after it has been off for a while". If you mean overnight or a bit longer it could be just a film of rust on the discs that rubs off at the first use of the brakes. That would be nothing to worry about. If it happens after brief stops it could be worn-out pads and you will need to get it checked urgently.

Without seeing the car or hearing the noise it's hard to say.
Callipers can get worse but will probably don't cause an accident.

Car model and year? Last service? Last brake pad change?

It only happens if the car is left over night or at least for a good few hours.
Is there anyway to check if its just rust without going to a mechanic?
    Thanks for the reply.

Its a ford mondeo 2002. I had the pads changed around 50,000 miles ago, but I had them checked at the service before last which was about 20000 miles ago and the mechanic said they were fine?
What do you mean about the callipers? Thanks for the help.

If it's the front caliper the car would pull to side during the noise so maybe that's not it.
Do you park with handbrake on? Try parking in gear and no handbrake and see if that works. If it does it's something with the handbrake itself, the cable or the rear calipers (or maybe it's drum brakes, I don't remember).
Again, without actually being there these are just guesses on my part.

    This is a caliper

Brakes are a vital safety item so in view of the lack of knowledge I think you should go to a mechanic rather than rely on an internet diagnosis. I'm sure your regular mechanic will give a bit of free advice so you can either put your mind at ease or plan a repair. With the mileage quoted by you it could need new pads. If you continue to drive on worn-out pads you will damage the discs and that will increase the cost of repair by at least three times.

Your last service was 20k ago? I'd resolve that first.

The fact that the brakes were fine 20k ago is irrelevant to their condition now.

However, if the problem is only when cold or for the first few mins then it may just be some surface oxidation appearing over a few hours due to the weather we've been having.
I don't understand the reluctance to have it checked out though, you have a noise in the most important safety system on your car and you admit you know nothing about them so there is only one option IMO.
