    Hi,

When pressing my finger nail against the side of my tooth I get a sharp pain. It feels like it hit a nerve. I don't notice anything else the rest of the time. What is the cause\remedy ?

The tooth is on the lower jaw, pain is localised right on gum line on a small area. its on the outside of the tooth near cheek.

Best advice you will get is go to a good dentist and start spending money on your teeth if you haven't or arent already doing so.

yeah I know a trip to the dentist is required. However I was trying to figure out what is the problem?

Could be anything! You really need to get to a dentist for a proper diagnosis OP

I can appreciate that I would need to get a dental appointment but I was curious as to possible causes.

The tooth does not have a cavity. There are no fillings on it. I eat and drink just fine. My bite doesn't bring up a sharp pain or anything like that. Its just when I touch the outside of the tooth its quite sore.

Until you see a dentist, I have a good temporary solution for you- stop sticking your fingernail against your tooth...!!:D

i never understand why people do this. it's not an unusual complaint!

may go to a doctor and complain of stabbing pains in my stomach... every time i stick a sharp knife in my belly!

I didn't want to make any booking just yet. It's not cheap. I guess the wiki is a better shot that this thread.

Could be a number of things, could be a sore finger who knows. If its not troublesome enough to be worth a trip to the dentist then there is not much to it.

Google "causes of sensitive teeth" will yield some results, which I am sure you looked at prior to posting, nobody else here has enough information to elaborate more than that. Sorry.

No worries. Unless it starts acting up I will leave the dentist for the time being.
