    Hello Folks,

I am currently thinking of buying a Diesel X type and have narrowed my choices down to 2.

I can get a 2008 X Type, AUTO, 2.2 Litre , 80,000Km for €12,500 PLUS my own as trade in

    or

    I can get a 2009 X type , MANUAL, 1998 ; 60,000Km for €12,000 cash. No trade in.

Both are lovely , well speked cars.

    My own car ( Trade In ) is a 2003 Jaguar X Type , 2.5V6 Sports Petrol, Auto , etc worth , i guess, c €2,000.

I like the Auto but that would not be a deal breaker.

Which engine of the 2 would be best to buy as both have relatively low mileage which appears genuine, as in 1 case i have confirmed it with the main dealer who stamped the book, but i haven't had a chance to do it for the 2nd one yet. The seller tells me he bought it new from a main dealer and got all the required servicing done there as well so should be ok.

So basically its your advice on which engine to buy i am looking for.

    Many thanks for your help.

Maybe a bit off topic here but are you switching from 4wd down to 2wd?

I thought all XTypes over 2.5 were 4wd.

    Hello Cungi,

Yes, i think that would also be another minus in the switch. The 4 WD was very useful when the snow was here the last few winters. I will definitely miss that as there is a serious hill out of my yard but i can't have it all.

There is also as serious lack of acceleration , even in the 2.2 Lr compared to the Petrol. However, i am changing jobs and will be doing large mileage so i need the Diesel for economy.

What tax bands are they? I used to have a link listing cars and their tax bands but i cant find it now :(
    And what is your mileage?

Have you considered converting your car to LPG? I fill up my car with these guys I have heard a lot of good reports about them. http://www.lpgain.com/
I cringe when I hear of people trading nice petrol cars for rattly diesel ones.

Ah feck, thought the 1998c was petrol for some reason. I'd still go for the 2.2 Auto though...

Wouldn't fancy the manual myself either :)

    Hello Folks,

    The choice is between:-

    1) 1998cc MANUAL X type Diesel

    or

    2) 2200cc AUTO X Type Diesel

I will be doing about 90 miles per day and LPG is not readily available locally so not really an option.

Which Diesel engine would you choose and why is what i want to know.

2.2 auto ..both derivitives of the MONDEO engines so would be as reliable or not as these...Injectors & EGR Valves would be two items that give problems but overall a very good car.

They are both well proven Ford Mondeo Puma TDCi diesel engines. Manual v auto is a personal preference, other than that I would go for the one in the best condition or all things being equal the one with the nicest spec.

    Hello Exador,

Sorry , I am not very technical but is an EGR valve a small thing on the drivers side of car that causes it not to start? I think that is what he said was causing a slight problem starting the car while i was there. Does it cost around €350 to fix if i remember correctly?

    Hi OP.

I have the 2 litre manual 2009 X-Type LE diesel since new, slightly higher mileage than the one you're looking at. Can definitively say it ain't no rattler. Excellent car - no trouble ever! Is the 2008 auto model the LE also? The LE was introduced some time middle or late 2008. You can differentiate by the grill out front which displays the Jaguar badge and there is no partition. There were a fair few (500 I seem to recall) improvements Jaguar claimed to be have been made over the previous model. I test drove the 2.2 LE and it had higher BHP, 140 I think, noticeably more power than my own (128.) Tax bands probably differ too. Can't imagine the MPG would be as good - I regularly get 50MPG per tank. I'd be inclined to go for the 2009 car having the newer reg and all and cheaper price but I'll admit I'm biased!

It may give a problem in advance like chugging and may bring on a glow plug light and then just not start.Sounds about right at 350 euro...

I believe the latest ones supplied only in the last few weeks are modified as prior to these there have been quite a few new ones failing again. Should be OK if latest type is fitted

Is it a MH reg by any chance ?

    Hello Exador,

Is it a MH reg by any chance ?

I am not sure, but are you the dealer selling such a car or do you know its history?;)

    90 miles a day - auto 2.2, no contest.
As mentioned both have issues wih injectors though. But all diesel engines seem to have "issues" now days.

2.2 seems kinda pricey to me for a 5 year old jag x type. 14k at the end of the day...

Think their could be some wiggle room there
