    That's unreal!

The 64GB Surface Pro Will Have Just 23GB of Usable Space

If you thought yesterday's news—that the 128GB Microsoft Surface Pro will only offer 83GB of usable storage—was bad, think again. The Verge has learned that the 64GB version will offer up just 23GB of space to the user.

It seems the Windows 8 install, built-in apps, and a recovery partition will consume 41GB of the total storage space, leaving just 23GB—that's 36 percent—of storage for the user. Perhaps it's time manufacturers started quoting available storage space in their ads, too?

Apparently, a lawsuit regarding this issue has already been filed.

I wonder what requires 41 GB though, my Windows 8 Professional virtual disk image is just under 8 GB in size (no recovery facility).

I completely agree companies need to advertise better what storage capacities their products have.

Functionality wise though, I don't think this is a big issue: I am running a Tablet with Windows 8 Pro on a 64GB hard drive. I've installed Office, Apps, Programs such as Sketchbook Pro, and have even installed the Skydrive sync utility, which keeps a hard copy of everything on the drive (About 4GB right now).

Of the visible 59GB of formatted space, I still have 9GB left over.

I suppose I could be more upset, but the truth is the tablet does everything I need it for. Storage for music and my Nintendo emulators is on a 32GB MicroSD - which I have to date, never even used.

Thing is, cloud storage does so much as it is right now. Anyone who subscribes to Office 365 will have their 7GB of usable space bumped to around 21GB (and you have 25GB already if you were an early adopter of SkyDrive), plus iTunes match/Pandora/Spotify/other online based music services eliminate the need for a device with tons of storage for music. My 16GB phone has access to my entire 80GB collection wherever I am.

Pro unlike it's unloved little brother RT will indeed sport a MicroSDXC card slot. My current understanding of it is a little vague, but it will definitely support at least 32GB. I would like to confirm for sure whether or not it will support larger card sizes that the SDXC format actually allows for (Theoretical cap is @ 2 Terabytes)

It's worth noting my Lenovo Yoga has almost the exact same amount of usable space on it as the Surface Pro 128GB is reported to have. After the OS and Recovery Drive and hidden partitions/formatting have their way with it. Recovery is 4GB, the C:\ is 93GB, less whatever the OS occupies. I still have 50GB free and nothing to do with it.

My iPhone still has 2.7GB Free, with access to 80GB of music via cloud, and 10.8GB of used space. But still no lawsuit for iPhone, which for a 16GB model only has 13.5GB of usable space. Those monsters.

non story as it's not an ipad and you can just buy a micro SD card.

if the RT doesn't support user expansion then it's just more evidence that they are trying to kill it at birth

Well for a start a 64GB drive will show up at under 60GB in Windows. Then you have the page file and hibernation file will take a chunk out of that as well.

I think Amazon have the right idea. From their Kindle Fire page:
Storage 8 GB internal memory, approximately 5.5GB available for user content
