B*stard Government Quangos

I thought these were supposed to be sorted out by the new government but they are still as bad as ever. I've just had to pay €50 to a bastard government quango for them to send me an e-mail, WHICH WILL TAKE THREE DAYS TO BE DELIVERED. THREE ****ING DAYS!!

I'm not normally an angry person, and I try to give people credit where it's due, but I think quangos reek of incompetence and laziness. It would be a sick joke except it's not funny.

Yeah, they should have a recruitment open day at Dublin Zoo.

I read that Shane Ross book a few years ago about all the Quangos- it'd sicken you. All the same people playing merry-go-round in these positions :( Present government should be ashamed of themselves for not tackling this.

That'll be €50 + €50 for the prompt response :pac:

Yeah, doesn't change my rant though, they are still state bodies with a Minister responsible for them.

Yeah, it means we can reward party hacks and patronise 'friends of the party' but do it at arms length and out of the public eye while outsourcing both accountability and responsibility for decision making from the government department and minister that should own both. Labour are the new 'Green's' when it comes to shameless quango stuffing lately.

The day the 'n' stands for 'non-government funded' will be the day this annoys me less...

Fine Gael pledged to abolish 145 quangos in their document Reinventing Government.
By end Oct 2011 alone, they had abolished 5, but had created another 8!

But don't say anything, the FG apologists will appear with a myriad of excuses for their very many broken promises...

That reminds me. I must go see that new political thriller in the cinema tonight.

    What's it called again?

    Quango Unchained.

I miss the Fianna Fail days when paying somebody €50 meant you got the job done quicker.:pac:

Na, they are safe enough, nobody goes after them, it's only honest joes like myself that get put off the road for three days because someone lost a stupid bit of paper that is as useful as a rubber dinghy in the Sahara. And get to pay for the privilege.

    * Now to be fair, as mentioned above, some/many are needed and are set-up council quango's and departments in order to run state facilities.
...They still however are an unelected organisation or agency that is financed by our government but that acts supposedly independently of it.
They all supposedly operate like RTE for example who never kiss ass to the government of the day.

Ireland in 2006 had more than 800 quangos, 482 at national and 350 at local level, with a total of 5,784 individual appointees and a combined annual budget of €13 billion.

Aye, I'm sure there is a number more that been invented since.
The country could hand out a quango to everyone in a Late Late show audience! :pac:

The IPA must be doing something right, they made the list twice? Maybe they charge 100 quid for an e mail.

So, after making a few strongly worded phonecalls the e-mail that was supposed to take three days to travel from Dublin to Donegal has now miraculously appeared in my inbox. To receive this correspondence so quickly has probably cost the taxpayer a lot more than the €50 I paid, so I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to you all for the gross misappropriation of public funds on my behalf.

    Official Irish Quangos
    (Some needed - some questionable)

As far as I'm concerned that only represents part of the problem.

We also have a huge amount of quango type organisations in the 'not for profit' sector. There are very many organisations which receive massive amounts of government funding with no accountability or regulation.

I think the latest estimates the Irish 'voluntary' sector to be worth 30-40 billion per year. While some of this is from donations from the public, it's my understanding that a large % comes from direct government funding. I would go so far as to claim that our government can't even tell us how much they give to this sector, as different departments will fund so many different organizations.

As an example Disability services account for about 10% of total Health spending, about 1.5 billion. To my knowledge practically all of this funding is given directly to 'charity' organisations without accountability or regulation. Service provision is mixed, some great organizations doing sterling work, others much, much less so. Not good enough.

At a time of economic crisis I just can't see how we can be handing so much money over to an unregulated, unaccountable sector.

A lot of people agree - including myself.

I read that Shane Ross book a few years ago about all the Quangos- it'd sicken you.

Fine Gael pledged to abolish 145 quangos in their document Reinventing Government.
By end Oct 2011 alone, they had abolished 5, but had created another 8!

But don't say anything, the FG apologists will appear with a myriad of excuses for their very many broken promises...

It seems they just amalgamated a lot of them and/or renamed them. Classic political sleight of hand.

Say what one might about Ross but not one detail in his books (two which I own) about Quangos and where the money goes, has been refuted.

His books are excellent reading and if he managed to accumulate the data for them through his own efforts, he's entitled to gain additional earnings for his work done legally.
...More than can be said by some questionable TD figures still occupying Dail seats.
