Old Games on a Laptop

So, i'm planning on picking up a small 11.6" laptop for travelling, and i was wondering how it would do with some older games. I know it's not going to play any new games, but old ones and maybe some indie titles. The likes of Homeworld 1/2, Baldurs Gate, and other late 90/early 00 games. I know gaming on a laptop isn't exactly ideal, but would be nice to occasionally play some games.

    Laptop specs will be either...

    1. 11.6" laptop, AMD E2-1800, 4gb ram, hd 7340 graphics card.
    2. 11.6" laptop, Pentium B987, 4gb, intel hd (probably hd3000)
    3. 11.6" laptop, i3-3217m, 4gb, intel hd (hd4000 i think).

The 3rd laptop is i bit out of my price range, but if it's massively better than the other two, i'd consider throwing the extra €100 at it.

Seriously get on Baldur's Gate asap, either from gog.com or the Enhanced Edition.

Spent a few hours last night with the buddies online for some retro gaming, couple of BG newbies... the next couple months gonna be epic :D

Oh i've cleared it many times. One of my favourite all time games.

Just never played it on anything other than a desktop.

Not sure about the AMD one, but #2 should all be able to play the likes of BGate, Fallout 1&2, Quake, MOH, Wolfenstein, AOE1&2. etc

Might even get Max Payne, Morrowind, Half Life, Hitman, Deus Ex and the like.

Some of them might need a tweak to play at that specific resolution though. I'm unsure.

I remember I came across a site ages ago where a guy had a load of tweaks and hacks you could run to play old games on unsupported resolutions, specifically netbooks. If I can find it again I'll post it here.

Any of those laptops will run those games perfectly. There are games far newer than those mentioned that'll run perfectly on those laptops, though no 2 and 3 are far more powerful. Don't get me wrong, you're not going to be playing Crysis 3 on any of them, but if it's strictly older gaming from the early 00's, you're sorted with any of them.

    The third one is best:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-4000.69168.0.html

You can play some brand new games on low settings with that, never mind decade-old ones. (Emphasis on some, check the FPS counts at the bottom of that link) But any of the three will give you no problems.

I feel the AMD E would run them at least as well as the i3 honestly. The i3 is going to be a superior CPU altogether, but in 3D performance the 2 should be quite comparable.

For old games yeah, but the Intel HD 4000 will let him play some newer games. But yeah, up to you if that's worth the €100, use that site to compare them. The HD 3000 is also better btw, if it's not much extra I'd go for that as a precaution.

I got the i3 in the end (using it now), but haven't really had a chance to test it with anything other then Baldur's Gate 2 so far. Stupid game is a bloody timesink :) Cheers for the tips.

    Also, Windows 8 is awful.
