ill have 8 cows with calves,4 twelve month old heifers and im thinking of buying 5 more heifers to put incalf in june,
my question is...is 14 acres sufficent to hold these from march to november?
im going to paddock it off to make 6 paddocks, its good dry land and im going to spread urea on it if weather improves

also is it ok to leave last years heifers graze with their mother and her new calves from this year i.e will they suckle her?

ok one final one.....looking to reseed 10 acres directly after 1st cut....just want to know cost of seed per acre and also cost of direct drill unit per hour/acre

budget for a plough based reseeding would be just under 400euro/acre.
thats fert, lime, spraying, fert, cultivation, etc. there was a thread not so long ago about it that goes into it in depth.

Spray your silage crop off with round up 4-5days prior to cutting.

Finding the right type of contractor in your area with a direct drill for grass can be a challenge!

i would say you would be tight to run that many on 14 acres but it could be done. if your reseeding i reckon you would be better off with the ploughing method. it will run at between 360-400 an acre with fertilizer seed and lime.

lime 23 per tonne spread i usually put out 2-3 tonne per acre but will depend on soil test results.
seed e70 per acre (serious variations in seed prices last year between 55-94)
fertilizer around 80 an acre like that depending on amount and type you put out

too many cattle on to little a ground leads to high input costs per head. not good for profit. buy cows and sell your weanling heifers at least you will have a faster return off cows.
