builders' houses are always falling down and the butcher's dog is always the worst shod. (That's the expression, right?)

Very sad, awful for the community.

The smart arse replies here are pathetic. Will never understand people who reply on a thread with comments like that.

RIP to the two who were killed and may those who are bereaved find a way to cope somehow.

30 ft high block wall came down. Im surprised there were not more injuries.
It must have got a massive gust of wind. Perhaps being a hardware store, the entire rear of the building was open or something.

An internal wall 27' high collapsed due to high winds and bad weather .

    May they rest in peace

The building is older than 9 months. If my memory stands to be corrected this was the same building that had a fire way back in 2008 when occupied by brooks building merchants. I remeber it well as my grandparents lived over the road

I can't see how the wind would have a major effect on an internal wall,it could have some effect but if there was a previous fire there that would have to be looked at.

Such a tragic accident. RIP to those killed

But it will be very interesting to hear the outcome of the inquiry. I believe that it is a relatively new building, and high winds or not, I wouldn't expect a wall to collapse like that

A 30ft single block wall is ludacris..no structural integrity whatsoever. I just watched rteplayer for the 9oclock news. Eye witnesses recall loading bays were open and with high winds could have contributed to the collapse.

Shame to hear about the second victim loosing their battle earlier this evening. RIP

Is that definitely the brooks building? That building doesn't seem to have an internal wall going by these pictures, so were they added later?

If the building material/structure design was the cause, I hope the architect that signed off on it is brought to court.

Could have been a display wall. I used to work in a large Hardware store and one of the walls had this large display arrangement that was up against the length of the wall. It was basically a gigantic stand for displaying tools. It was about 15ft high and about 35ft long and it was made of metal with an overhanging shelf on the top for holding empty boxes and unopened stock. It must have weighed a s**t load when fully stocked with hundreds of hand tools and super heavy professional grade power tools like impact drills and consaws and the like. I could see something like that collapsing and killing somebody..

I heard a builder on the radio ( could've been Mick Wallace now that I think of it) a few months back saying how there are a lot of buildings gonna be going the same way and even worse than priory hall did in the next few years. There was talk of contractors firing them up at record pace to get to the next job. If this was one I sincerely hope somebody is brought to justice for their actions. As an engineer ( mechanical not structural ) I've alway been told " When engineers make mistakes, people get hurt " it their jobs to be right 100% of the time and be accountable for their actions.

I know of two houses built in the boom and both are uninhabitable due to severe dampness, the home bond company don't want to know and the builder is now bankrupt and living over in Spain the poor fella.

To the families of the victims, my condolences

I fear the threat of wind gusting was not taken into account when this wall was built. However if large warehouse doors were allowed to be open in major storm, something was likely to give. If it wasnt that wall, it would have been the roof.
Certainly questions must be asked of both designers and operators.

An internal wall or roof should be constructed to withstand the winds that could come through the premises. I wouldn't be of the view that something was likely to give under these circumstances if as you alluded to the designers and operators constructed the thing properly.
    RIP to the unfortunate victims.

These kind of freak incidents tend to be the hardest to hear because your brain can't displace you from it by rationalising, "That would never have happened to me".

This is one of those things that could quite literally have happened to any one of us. RIP to the deceased and condolences with the bereaved.

When I initally heard about it, I guessed that a forklift of something had hit the wall but it seems that the wind is at fault. Can't help but wonder if the fire a few years ago weakend the wall in any way.

At any rate, it's a tragic accident.

Ya, it was the wind. I'm not too sure about the fire causing affect. My father was the one who opened it officially. He was given a tour of it and he was saying to me last night it seemed to be built up to a good standard.

It reopened under new management after a major fire. Not wanting to speculate but was there ever a structural check done prior to reopening one wonders.

The names were on the lunchtime news. I'd say you'd get it on RTE Website.
God love them. You don't expect anything like that on a shopping trip. Very sad.
