Cars wanted ads

    Hi there...
Looking for some advice about 'cars wanted' ads on DoneDeal...
I have a 2005 Merc that has a snapped timing chain, I've decided against getting it repaired, and am trying to get some kind of cash back for the car. The garage that it's in (where I had it towed to) have offered 900 but am hoping I might get more elsewhere.

I've seen some ads on DoneDeal for 'cars wanted' - the kind where the person is advertising for any kind of old car. I sent the details to one person (inc the chain problems) and they've said they'd give about 2-2.5k for it, but I'm wondering if these ads are dodgy and if there's anything I should be aware of before proceeding any further with it?

Have only ever traded a car into a garage before so no experience at all with this.

You don't give any info about the car (model, condition, miles, etc), but assuming it's not an A-class merc, 900 sounds very little for it and the 2000-2500 offer sounds nearer to it's value.

If the guys pay you that amount for your car in proper cash, and they sign over the car into their name (either via the licensing cert or via an RF105 form, either way you should post it, not them), then there is not much to go wrong in the transaction.

It's an E Class Kompressor, 160k km on clock. Had thought it was in good condition until this happened! Never had major problems with it

Thanks for the feedback, had been thinking if they paid cash and signed the forms it'd be ok but wasn't sure if I was missing anything or if there was anything else to beware of.

Tell that person to shove that 2.5 k up their smoke pipe. Your car is worth at least double that, running that is.

Now get that car fixed and sell it for far more than you were offered

Have been quoted 3.5 - 5k to get it fixed so don't want to go down that route. Just want to get rid of it now but obviously want to get as much as I can for it in its current state - someone who knows what they're doing can probably fix it up cheaper than I could get it done for.
Just don't want to end up getting scammed!

Source a decent engine yourself with the same engine number as the original and give it to a decent mechanic.

Ask Traynors car breakers for a quote to see if it is genuinely worth repairing.

No point in getting a second hand engine , chains go in them all, although you could do the chain and gears while its out.

Sounds like your garage is overcharging you on the job and undervaluing the purchase price of it,

So get it out of there.

Lots of independent have experience of doing these chains so get a few prices.

2.5k isn't a bad offer with 160 k miles done with chain and possibly valve and piston damage.

Chain breaking on these is not a cheap fix. I agree the car should be worth 5k+ when repaired, but could cost a good bit to sort out.

If I remember correctly, the Kompressor engines are hard to get and are expensive secondhand.

Thanks all. Pretty much decided that I won't get it repaired and just want the best value I can get for it now. Will get a few quotes for it as it is and decide from there.
