Non-display of tax disc

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the penalty for this currently is?

I just got back from being out of the country for a couple of months and my tax lapsed at the end of the year.

I've renewed it online and am waiting for the new disc to arrive. Meanwhile I am trying to figure out whether it's worth taking the risk of driving despite not having the disc. I have a print out that shows I've made payment online and I'm hopeful that should I get stopped by a guard I can explain the situation and that they would be understanding about it. Not too keen travelling around on public transport in the current weather.

The Gardai have the power to confiscate the vehicle.

Really not worth the risk. Just leave the car at home until your disk arrives.

I would be surprised if you were prosecuted esp if arrears were also paid

Hmm... don't really want the guards' taking the car off me. Guess I should just wait it out till it arrives :(

    Thanks lads.

I have been stopped a good few times while waiting on the disc. Showed them a pic on the phone of the confirmation page of the website and they just let me through.

Highly unlikely that they'd seize the car when the tax is less than a month out and he has a printout of the renewal.

OP, just don't park it in a public place as you could get a ticket but I'd take a chance with the Gardai, you should be able to talk your way out of it with the tax already paid.

If the tax is out two clear months. So if the tax is out since end of December, section 41 power doesn't become effective until start off March.
