    Hi , my boss just rang to say the office laptop is acting up. It's turning on fine but nothing will open from the home screen and it won't turn off without removing the battery. She said its been like this for a couple of days. She's taking it to a guy today but said he might have to remove everything from it and we'll have to start from scratch again. Does anyone know if it can be fixed without having to remove everything as this would be a disaster. There's loads of stuff on it that I need.

    Thanks.

    Create a bootable USB stick with a lightweight Linux distro. Use Yumi from pendrivelinux ( easy to follow GUI) and put something like Puppy on it.

    Boot from the USB. You should then be able to see the harddrive and copy all you want to a USB stick or sticks if there is more data than will fit on one stick.

    Your data = your responsibility.

    Having said that, any techie worth their salt should have the means to recover files before they wipe/restore a system. It's also a welcome opportunity to crank up the bill ;)

    Karen,
    Insist that repair Shop save the data as they are probably taking the quick way to fix it, it sounds like it could be stuck in a Windows Update and should be fixable without having to lose data. If you have your own computer then you could go herer:
    http://knoppix.net/
    Download and burn to DVD and insert into infected laptop, it will boot up similar to Windows and if you have a USB Data stick you should be able to copy your files.
    Caveat Emptor (-;

    We got the laptop open in safe mode and saved everything to a USB :)
