Selling Stuff for Cash

Seen something sad today. A place you give in gold for cash. I know they have been around for ages and adds on TV and all. If people need money they need money. But – I’d imagine the places that buy gold, give very little relative to its value ? I don’t know this ?

Anyway , these places used to be more discreet , now they are all over the place. This one was in the middle of the main walkway of a busy shopping centre. Was drinking coffee.

I did not mean to be looking – but was in full view. A lady took off her wedding ring, she hesitated, then put it in her pocket. Was very sad – she almost handed it over. I would rather give her the money then let her.

None of my business, but someone drinking coffee and somebody selling gold in a shopping centre. Seemed to be very a stark reminder of the situation some people are in.

I guess people can sell what they want. But eye opening today.

Or else she just divorced her husband and was wanting to get rid of her ring, why not try get some cash for it :p

TBH op , there are many of reasons why she was looking to sell it, in desperate need of some cash is just one one of many reasons.

Pawnbrokering is the world's second oldest profession, and like the oldest, pornbrokering, whilst we may not like it, we are never going to stop it so might as well regulate it as best we can.

How do you know it was a wedding ring?

If it was a wedding ring why wasn't she wearing it, why put it back in her pocket?

How do you know it wasn't a ring she found or a ring she was given, and thought "I'll never wear this, why not see how much it's worth"

You are reading to much into and assuming you know all about a persons financial situation

Well not very little generally, but yea nowhere near it's value.

+1, the cash for gold places are in dire need of regs. At the moment they're largely self regulating.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Some lad called when the missus was here. Last Tuesday. Asked if we had any gold we wanted to sell. Well dressed elderly man. Carrying no more than a shopping bag (scales?).

Wish I was home that day. Could have done with a few bob and someone to fill that hole in the garden.

Some people are good at reading situations. I'm sure his feeling on what was happening was fairly accurate. I trust, in many cases, that body language is fairly easily read.

Sorry she was wearing it - it was on her wedding finger - she looked at it in anguish, it was next to the engagement one.

I am not I am just trying to make a point that there are many of reasons why she might be looking to sell that ring, that's even if she was going to sell, she could have been just seeing out of curiosity how much it was worth.

The op was sitting drinking coffee, how does he/she know if the guy with her wasn't her now boyfriend, a family member or a Friend.

The point I am trying to make is you can't judge a persons financial situation just by observing what they are doing in a shop, as I said there are many of reasons has to why she was there.

This story is like the whole "cause a person shops in a second hand store, it automatically makes them poor" when that is simply not the case!

Why was she selling the wedding one before the engagement one?
(I realise you can't answer that - just wondering about her priorities)

He is telling us he has disposable income, in contrast to the lady in the story.

This reminded me of a court case here in Galway last year:
    http://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/49094/jewellery-for-cash-businesses-must-take-more-responsbility-says-judge-in-stolen-jewellery-case
A mother and son failed to contest the charges of handling stolen jewellery after their credibility was deemed by a District Court judge to be in tatters.

Judge Mary Fahy found that the claims made by Mary Barry (43) and her son Jason (18), both of 148 Rahylin Glebe, Ballybane, were not to be believed after a lengthy hearing at Galway District Court on Monday. The court heard that a burglary had taken place a neighbour’s house and that later that day attempts were made to sell on the stolen property to a Cash For Gold outlet. ....
Detective Sergeant John McElroy then gave evidence that he and Detective Garda Gerry Carroll had been on duty in Eyre Square Shopping Centre, some time after 3pm later that day, when their attention was drawn to a man, known to them as Damien Barry, at the Cash For Gold desk located across from Burger King, and they watched as a transaction involving two rings took place. As they were passing they also took notice of a second man, Jason Barry, hanging around nearby. When the transaction was complete the two men met and went to leave together. When questioned the two men said they were selling rings for their mother. Det Sgt McElroy added that both men offered the same excuse and when Det Garda Carroll phoned Mary Barry she confirmed this story and gave descriptions of the two rings. The gardai let the two men go, however soon after they received a report regarding the burglary which occured earlier that day and they returned to the Cash For Gold desk to gather details of the transaction that had been made. They then went to the Barry home where they met with Mary and Jason Barry. Det Sgt McElroy said that when he asked for the return of the property Jason “looked at his mother as if looking for approval to say something and she indicated ‘no’ by shaking her head”, leading gardai to believe that she had played an active part.

I think there is huge attachment to the diamond - also wedding comes off first. She put it in pocket , ready . I didn't want to look anymore. I walked. Would have given her the money - but you could get a punch in Dublin for that.

OK I'll say it one last time...

YOU don't know if she was actually going to sell her ring, and if she was there are many reasons as to why she would.

Asked above... why sell her wedding ring and not her engagement ring?

You are making a story out of nothing (IMO)

Hope the coffee was nice

Body language is huge in communication, some people are excellent at reading it.

Wedding ring is probably heavier and worth more in those shops, perhaps the engagement ring was passed down from her mother etc.

I'm guessing she looked a bit down in the dumps and he picked up on it while he watched them. FAirly easy to put 2+2 together and get 4 if that's the case. Sad woman with defeated body language sees how much ring is worth in cash for gold shop. Maybe in the end it wasn't worth selling...maybe it was just out of interest.

Ya see the true story being, as per newspaper article above, yer wan had just mugged a little old lady out in the car park and stole her wedding ring. So in she walks to Mr Cash 4 Gold in the shopping centre to make a quick buck. Takes ring off finger, even though it didn't fit but she has to look like she owns it.

Then just as she's about to make the transaction, out of the corner of her eye she she's some dude slurping a fancy coffee staring at her. "Shít", she thinks to herself, "it's the Cops and me missing me court date this morning". Cue nervous sad look, cue getting addled so she puts ring in pocket forgetting she was wearing it coming in.

Obviously your not great at the whole comprehension thing here it is a cash for GOLD.
The diamonds in an engagement ring are worthless here.they only pay you a (very small) percentage of the spot price of gold.
It is then sent off to a third party and melted down.
Make no mistake these places are owned by scum and are largely there to help other scum fence stolen items.
I'm sure they have a deal to get rid of the diamonds to some other seller but will give you no value for them.
One opened where I live but he didn't last long.I believe a word was had in his ear about his "business model" and he moved on.

    Gold Ring

    They stand apart

    Leaning on the desk

    Ugly yellow

    Dirty suited hands

    Coffee onlookers

    Nosey bastards

    Sad eyes

    Anxious looks

    What a mess

    What a life

    “Worthless gold”

    Forty Euro

    Aisle dreams gone

    Horrible world

    Shopping centre rush

    Please give me hope
