In certain situations you can apply to Masters courses without an honours degree through RPL or recognised prior learning.
If you don't have a degree, will that mean that the Masters is a progression and thus would count for BTEA?.

No. Masters is a progression for those with a level 7 or 8 also. The issue isn't progression, it's that bar a couple of courses Masters are not eligible for BTEA regardless of the educational background of the applicant.

Only the postgraduate PGDE (old higher diploma in education) is considered. Not Masters Degrees I'm afraid OP.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Very limited exception though (person with no undergraduate degree). But I guess their are some brave mature students out there who would have the drive and interest to succeed on a Master 's Degree Programme without having completed an undergraduate degree. But at least it's a chink of light for some.

    That's false.
Any Higher Diploma and PGDE is eligible for BTEA.

I've been looking into this as well as I've been on Jobseekers for nearly a year having graduating last year and I'm almost finished a Springboard course in IT but still not hopeful of getting employment . From what I have seen you can apply for courses described below:

You may get the Back to Education Allowance for a postgraduate course that leads to a Higher Diploma (H.Dip.) qualification in any discipline or a Graduate Diploma in Education (primary and secondary teaching). Other types of postgraduate qualifications are not recognised for BTEA.

    It also says that:

Postgraduate students who meet the qualifying conditions for the special rate of grant will be eligible to have their post-graduate tuition fees paid up to the maximum fee limit (€6,270).

A further limited number of students who would previously have qualified under the standard grant thresholds will qualify to have a €2,000 contribution made towards the costs of their fees.

Am I right in assuming that your course must still be either a H.Dip or a Graduate Diploma in Education to qualify for the paid tuition fees above

On a side note it looks like you can apply for a part time masters (pay for it yourself) but still keep your social welfare payment, noting that you have to prove it will increase your chances of gaining employment, so noonan23 that could be an option for you if feasible
