    Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me. When I plug in my Galaxy to my laptop it only charges. When I go into Samsung Kies it says connect a device.
Basically my laptop is not recognizing my phone at all. And I really need to upload my pictures.

    Any ideas anyone?

have you rooted or unofficial rom on your phone?

    also Kies is Sh*te

what exactly are you trying to backup? personally i'd use ANYTHING else than kies!

If its just the photos you want to upload have you them on internal or sd card memory?

if internal you can browse your phone in "my computer".

Have you home wifi? if so its easy to do it wirelessly with some apps too

I'm trying to back up my pictures and need to add music to my phone.
My phone is only charging when usb is in the port.
And my phone isn't showing up on my computer!

I have home wifi too and its the internal memory I am using on my phone.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid
Airdroid is a very handy app for moving data from phone to computer and voce versa

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransfer
    is another alternative

Just out of curiousity when you plug your phone into the computer and slide down the notification bar can you see a usb symbol?

    or anything that mentions USB?

If so tap it and choose the option box "media device (MTP)"

this will allow you to browse on your pc with a USB cable

God I thought I was ok at computers I don't even know where the notification bar is. I'm at work at the moment but will try the links tonight. Thanks so much for your help, I'm so tired today I spent hours trying to sort it last night!

haha its always something minor that you never pay any attention to that causes the issue.

By notification bar i mean that pull down menu with all the wifi, data, roatation etc at the top and currently running or updates available on it.

When you plug in a USB to a computer and your phone a new notification will appear.

see the attached screenshot to see what it should look like. Click the bar and it will open a new menu and if you tick the media box it will be picked up by PC.

If it still doesn't work let me know

I had the same problem. Just connect your phone as a camera. Pull down the notification bar and theres an option to connect as a camera.

ok bare with me a sec

are you batch transferring them (ie is it a zip file?)

if so what are you using to unzip the transferred file?

have you tried winrar? or 7zip?

edit for clarification, are you copying photos from the phone to the PC and are you doing copy or are you zip downloading?

are you browsing in photos or file explorer?

I'm trying to recreate your issue but not having any luck, i'm using chrome and winrar

also did you try the USB cable again?

Using the USB and it's only charging my phone!

I was going to batch transfer them, didn't know about zip/unzip but tried just the one and it transferred. Although I have over 1,000!

Thats really odd with the USB. Do you know how to enable USB debugging?

    Settings - Developer Options

enable the options (slide at the top)

    tick USB debugging.

connect phone. This should install drivers that you need although seeing as you already used Kies you should have them but its worth a shot

    As for airdroid....

you can download pics one at a time thats fine but you need an easier way. when you select all and click download

    O80q9jy.png

does it download a zip file?

I really appreciate all your help.

Unfortunately the baby woke last night and I'm at work now again!!

I know when I tried to transfer the batch file there was an option that came up, as save, save as, and also something else but when I tried all three of the options, they did not work. I think the odd photo where I have used Instogram on, (i.e. 2!) it was able to download.

I will try all options again tonight, I really am thinking now I should have stayed with iPhone. Although I have never had a problem with uploading pictures or music with android before.

I was wondering, when you plug in the phone through the USB before windows would automatically come up, asking, do you want to upload pics, play music, burn a CD etc, why would those options not even be coming up? Would anyone know?

    Danniemcq

I just changed the settings on my phone, even though it said it will enable phone transfer etc but it said my phone could break also, hopefully not!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

It could be a driver issue where the drivers are not correctly installed when you first connected the phone.

At the minute its a case of ruling out things that could be causing an issue.

Don't worry about that warning that pops up when you activate the developer option. unless you go crazy messing with settings in here you have nothing to worry about. So hook it up to the PC once when its in debugging mode and see if anything pops up on the PC, (it might install extra drivers)

for the next test anyway you have to turn off this option

When you plug the phone back into the PC now (or whenever you get a chance) you need to check 2 things, Does an open folder dialog pop up on screen or do you get a popup in the bottom right saying driver missing/driver error or somthing similer) and does the USB symbol at the very top left of the phone screen (the 3 pronged icon) appear?

If nothing is on the computer screen but the phone screen has the icon pull down the notification bar and check if there is a bar notification here in the same place as your new text messages mentioning USB. click the bar anyway and you should see Media Device and Camera (PTP).

Have you seen anything like this while messing around with the phone?

And on the case of Airdroid does my above screen shot look anything like what you see?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭pinkstars

For a long time I haven't remembered seeing the 3 pronged symbol up on the phone...

I remember before the phone used to go into Data Transfer mode when I was uploading stuff.

I will try those later, or I will give up! Just afraid now I'll lose or damage my phone and could lose all my pictures.

I just popped my phone into work PC to see what would happen but its just charging. I would think USB, drivers etc could be blocked here though.

    Sync Photos to Picasa, no?
Connecting cables to backup stuff these days is just a hassle! Use the Force Cloud!

Or Dropbox Camera Upload is handy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭pinkstars

I actually did use Dropbox (didn't really know what I was doing) but I have run out of space!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭pinkstars

I just used Dropbox a while back while I was on my phone.

I probably should have asked this at the start but have you enabled either dropbox or google drive sync?

that way when you take a pic or video they are uploaded to the site and synced on your home pc if you have it installed there.

I know it can be harsh on data but if you have home (or work :p) wifi it should be ok. The syncing on your pc could take some time the first time you do it as it has to sync everything but once set up the first time it works really well.

I know not everyone uses it though for whatever reasons but worst case scenario that option is there for you!

Are you using the same cable at work as you are at home? any chance you could borrow or liberate someone elses?

Huh, I thought all S3 owners got 50GBs free?!

    I have a S2 and I flashed a ROM that originally came from the S3 and I got extra ~45GBs space! :D

Google Drive also has 5GBs free, but strangely Picasa (Googles Photo sync) has only 1GB(?).
Edit: Actually checked again and it's 5GB too.

did you get the 50gb that was available when you connected with your s3?

are you syncing files from your computer to the site?

I know you can easily have hit 50gb if you use it a lot but the limit for normal users is 5 i think.

easy way to check is go to dropbox.com and login and view files/folders check if there are folders from your computer you don't want synced (can't remember default settings off the top of my head)

personally i like airdroid for its ease of use and the fact that you don't upload to web and then download to pc so its nice and quick (well when it works right and you aren't having issues like you are now!)

we do but if you sync the wrong folder on your computer it can easily fill up!

also i think google have rolled docs/drive/picassa into one 5gb bundle instead of 3 seperate 1gb ones.

at least i think picassa is included in that too

I probably have enabled Dropbox to sync maybe? As it does say sometimes on my phone notifications, camera upload paused out of space or something!

Or I think there might have been a sync with something to do with Google too. I can't remember all of the data ever transferring to my laptop but I do remember it giving me the option of enabling it on my phone before!

How can a phone be this complicated!

Ok so you need to check your space used on dropbox. open dropbox app on your phone and go into settings. the second row shows space used, does this read 50gb or thereabouts?

syncing if done right is really REALLy good for backups and user friendliness but if done wrong it can be a nightmare. All your space is suddenly gone and all your bandwidth is gone too!

I'd almost put money on that its a really simple fix, i remember ages ago having an issue with my phone that it was a case of my unticking an option way before for some other reason or another

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭pinkstars

Opened Dropbox, and checked settings. Space used is 107.3% of 5GB.

Ok so thats an issue there as an s3 user you should have been upgraded to 50gb. I'm at work myself so can't check but if you go to dropbox online (use a pc) there should be an option to upgrade space.

It should be the usual stuff like refer a friend get extra space etc but look to see if you can activate bonus phone storage or something. If not i'd shoot them an email

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭pinkstars

Oh thanks so much. I'll check that.
When I go to camera upload it says in red 'stopped out of space'

I will have a look around again tonight at it all so.

If I get my pics sorted would it be easy enough to transfer music from pc to phone?!

yeah if you are using 107% of space thats why you can't upload.

transferring music to phone via dropbox is again fine if you have good upload and download speeds as any music you add to folder to share/sync will have to be uploaded to dropbox first and then downloaded to your phone.

Dropbox afaik also limits upload and download speeds as it works in the back ground and it doesn't want to affect your browsing.

It does have the bonus though that anywhere you go you can log into dropbox on any computer and you can access it.

Transferring music, especially if it's a lot will probably be faster over USB cable the first time, then use dropbox from then on if you want to add an album or a few more singles.

Or if you're adventurous you could set up a shared folder on your network and copy them over wifi with ES File Explorer or something.

Thank you especially for all your help!

    Dumbo here like.

I looked at the Air thingy as I really needed to get 2 tracks onto my phone last night (transferred all my pictures) and the Samsung Kies is an awful thing to use really! No matter what happened it wouldn't go onto my phone. An hour or two later and it was on!

I was afraid to even look at Dropbox, my head was addled. I think it is because I usually have no spare time and so that is why I wanted to get it done and don't have patience!

Should I untick some of the settings which I ticked on my phone yesterday?

    no probs!

the delay could be a lot of things, were other devices on the wifi, were you using torrents or anything that could affect your bandwidth?

any settings you changed yesterday shouldn't make any difference. (you can turn USB debugging off now though i think)

unless you want to change that USB option in the dropdown to MTB again if its on camera

    Oh no what's Torrents?

I think it was that I was trying to transfer music from Windows Media Player or iTunes to Kies so that it would go on my phone but it wasn't working.

Even trying to use the CD to upload the music to my phone was a problem with Kies!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

Kies is a nightmare, i never use it. To put music on now that the USB cable works though when you plug in the phone and chose MTB (data storage) in the options.

Then when you open my computer you should see phone i9300 or something. double click and you'll see your files.

Create a folder called music or mp3 if there isn't one there.

Now find the mp3s on your pc you want to move and select them and then copy.

Open your music folder on the phone now and paste.

no need for extra apps or programs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,163 ✭✭✭✭danniemcq

Oh and torrents are downloads using a torrent client like utorrent.

I thought if that was running and/or you were downloading at the same time there could be a delay in data transfer as connection to phone probably had lower priority
