Dublin City Council has voted to allow housing development on religious and institutional lands, a move which follows a legal challenge by the Sisters of Charity.
The High Court ruled last year that a ban on private residential development on all institutional lands in the city's current development plan was too restrictive and quashed the zonings known as Z15.
A special meeting of councillors tonight agreed to a city manager's report which redefined Z15 zoning to state that residential is 'open to consideration'.
It applies to more than 1,800 acres in the city area owned by institutions including religious orders, schools, hospitals and army barracks.
Although there is enough houses in Dublin, certain churches whose owners need to hand money owed to the government over child sex abuse can now be leveled to build a nice house or two.

A trite and over simplistic description of the situation.
More a cheap shot at the churchs than a thread about either zoning or polotics.

Combined that's about the size of the Phoenix Park.

I wonder will any consideration be given to building on a sustainable model, with due consideration given to increasing local amenities such as school places or bus routes when they do grant permission to build on these areas.

Or will it be the usual free for all, "slap it up quick, flog it on and make profit" short sightedness that generally prevails here.

A lot of those places are in prime development areas so I presume it'll just be a case of build 'em quick, as it "creates jobs". The failings can be dealt with afterwards.

John Tierney's last kick in the bollocks to the people of Dublin.

Sums up his entire 2006 - 2013 reign of Laissez-faire planning policy. All about the development levy.
