Toyota Yaris Diesel 1.4

So I've been offered a '02 1.4 diesel Yaris with about 140k on it for €2800.

I'm thinking that it's probably over priced, what do ye think?

Any opinions on them and would the extra cash be better spent on the facelifted model (though not the later 2006+ model change)?
Indeed any alternatives would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

A lot of 1.0 02s will make that money.

The engine is a hoot in the yaris, although the clutch can't handle the torque that well if driven any way spirited.

Facelift models get abs and a CD player, but to be fair, you're not going to be tripping over diesel yariss in this country.

Looks at year, looks at engine size: is it an import?

If so, was it imported new, if not, check the underbody and wheels for corrosion.

Well what are people’s opinion of the same engine in the Corrola body?

I’d imagine that with the extra room it’d be sluggish & less frugal, there’s probably more experience of this option than of the smaller diesel Yaris.
The extra room would be handy but not essential so it’d come down to cost at the end of the day, both running & purchase.

The Yaris version had 75bhp, the Corolla had 90bhp.

    No need to shout :p

Afaik the 1.4d4d diesel engine in the yaris had 75bhp and the Corolla had an uprated version of the same engine with 90bhp. They are very refined for a diesel engine and run very quiet unlike the usual clattery diesels. I know a few people with the 02-07 model corolla with the 1.4 diesel engine and they are all very happy with them and all have reported very good fuel consumption.

Two issue that can occur in them though are noisy gearbox bearings and the front shock absorbers does give a little bit of bother in them. Other than that they are very reliable.

They're a rocket. Can do 185km/h in mine and id say with a full service maybe even more. Have seen them doing 200km/h on youtube. Had one for the last 16 months and never had a days bother with it. As regards to fuel consumption I get around 55-60mpg so they're quite economical too. They're also very easy to get insured on. You won't be dissappointed with a Corolla op :)

Anything will do 185 kmph provided you have a long enough road and you don't value your licence.

Even a 105hp golf is a 'rocket' in comparison

Top speeds are irrelevant. Acceleration is key.

Acceleration is also good. Never had a problem overtaking cars in a short space of time.

Things are bad when a 1.4 diesel is described as a rocket.

Compare it to a previous 1.0L and it is a rocket. Has also been quicker than 1.9 tdi engines :pac:

They are hardly universal baselines though.

I rented a Yaris diesel in France back in 2005 or so. I was really impressed at the time, done 1000 km or so in it. Performance was more than adequate (I wouldn't say it was a rocket, but compared to its class, it is quite quick) and decent car over all. Now, it was an impression of 8 years ago, haven't been in one since and guess it has aged with todays standards.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the statement that a poverty spec car with a measly 75 bhp is now considered a "rocket" and faster than the (hardly fast) VW 1.9 TDI? Only in Ireland....

Op, if you are buying a 1.4 diesel toyota engine, make sure it had good regular gearbox oil changes. They suffer if they don't get this proper servicing.

This sound's like my toyota yaris diesel that is for sale!! Yes it is very cheap and not overpricedbiggrin.png But seriously I thought it was priced right compard to petrol yaris of the same year.

It's a small light car with a torquey diesel engine, I'd certainly have no problem driving one tbh so not sure quite why it's getting so much slack here. Add in the lower tax and 50mpg all day long and it's a winner in my eyes.

It's light and got a relatively big engine under the bonnet for it's class, what's not to like?

Hi FirstinLastout, No not me but it is funny that I have the same year and around the same mileage car up for sale. They are a great car and good mpg, never had any trouble with it.

Same engine used in the Mini diesels up til late 06. But the yaris is a good bit lighter I'd say. So you can smugly burn mini diesels away from the lights...

So... BMW sourced a Toyota engine for the Mini?
I had assumed that they had sleeved down a diesel of their own.

Didn't know that the 1.4D4D was in the Mini? Sure you're not thinking of the 1.6 PSA unit?

Dunno would any of them have fitted! The petrol engine of the same era was manufactured in brazil by Tritec and was also fitted to Chrysler Neon!

    PSA/bmw stuff from 07 on.

The MINI was fitted with the Toyota 90bhp 1.4 D-4D engine initially and then replaced by the co-developed 1.6 PSA engine.

Toyota will also switch to BMW sourced 2.0 diesel engines in their passenger cars too from 2014 afaik. 1.4 will probably soldier on in the smaller cars though.

Picked up a wee 02 D4D Yaris up the north at the weekend, €2,000, hoping it'll do me a few years as a run-around back and forth to work....
