What Should I Buy?

So come September I'll be commuting to college. From Tipperary to Thurles- a round journey of 73 km/day. Along with that I'll be heading to Limerick 3 times a week at least. So thats 76km x 3= 228km. Then trips to the gym and all that 4 days a week which will be 25km round trip x 4= 100km.

    So that's a total of 693km/week- say 700km/434miles.

Saving now to get my first car, driving a bit now so what I was wondering am I best off getting a diesel with that mileage- around 22,600miles a year or a petrol up to 1.4?

I think diesel would probably be the best way to go but then there's tax rates which I'm unsure of how they work out?

Remember I'll be a student so car budget won't be through the roof:pac:

Definitely a diesel. A 1.4 petrol would cost more to run than the 1.6 petrol version.
    But definitely a diesel

Cheers, at least with the diesel I can get more MPG for my buck. I wouldn't say I'd be heavy footed at the best of times but the petrol I drive now I have a tendency to try get it up to 80km/hr pretty quick because the slow speed of it kills me:pac:

Plus, it drinks petrol for a 1.1 so that's ruled out of the question.

Another option I forgot to mention is that my mum is planning on driving my dads 1.4 vti Citroen C3 2011, which is actually very good on juice. The plan was let the father go down the bangernomics route, her get a newish car-for work and that and possibly let me drive the 11?

    Indicated MPG is 48 (parkers.co.uk)

Well if I was getting a free 2011 car and I was comfortable driving that car I'd be going for that one. What's insurance like on it?

    What age are you?

Would you not move closer to the college?

Presuming you have a small budget you'll only buy a POS diesel for under 2, even 3 grand and could easily be left with heavy maintainance and high tax.

That Thurles road is a bad road on the best of days.

What's your budget? You have to remember insurance on anything more than a 1.1 litre for a first time driver is going to be hella expensive.

Insurance currently actually isn't too bad. I'm a named driver under my mother. Insurance was 975euro for the two of us or there abouts with me on my provisional.

I think when we enquired about insuring me in the 11' in April 2012 that Axa maybe? quoted 1400euro in the 11' again under my mother.

With me doing my test in the not too distant future those figures should stay the same as a named driver and will definitely go higher on my own obviously.

That's the other side of the coin. 18 currently, will be 18 when I pass(hopefully) my test and 19 when I set about college. Hopefully I'll have 6 months experience on a full licence by the time I go to college in September. All the while probably being insured in the 1.1.

6 months counts for nothing towards insurance.
