Hi there. Could anyone out there guide me towards links or guidelines for the role and responsibilities of a medical officer in a community defib scheme. Thanks so much in advance.

Contact the National Ambulance Service in your region, they may have a Community First Responder programme close to you.

I'm guessing you or someone you know have been asked to fullfill this role? From previous expierence the medical officer on such a committee would be the person with the medical knowledge & other members of the group could turn too for advice? Also could be responsible for training & equipment, but this all depends on the group structure?

That's exactly it. It's a small group as yet but want to get a proper outline of role and responsibilities established and down on paper. Trying to find out how and who to get an outline of this from.

Id imagine the best course of action would be to liase with HSE control officer in your area? Not only would any potential calls in the future coming from them but perheaps the station officer in question could put you in touch with other such groups in other towns whom could advise on the dos/donts of such a group? Maybe somebody in your small group knows someone in ambulance station & take it from there? Ps the group I'm familiar with the medical officer is our local GP.

    Hi,

I'd recommend contacting the Irish Heart Foundation for guidance, they help people to set up groups and then acredit them as heartsafe communitiites, absolutely fantastic to deal with. The HSE / NAS will integrate you into their scheme once you are set up, and will be happy to come meet you and offer advise, and will help you with replenishing consumable equipment, but its IHF you need to talk to first. Best of luck, the logistics can be a bit daunting - getting people organised, but from experience you will have no shortage of volunteers, and the skills and the training are very straight forward so don't be nervous of any roles. If you want to PM me, tell me where you are etc, I'll try to find you some contact people.
