Hey, looking to take up hurling this year (havent played since primary school) and have encountered a slight problem getting a helmet to fit. None of the sports shops seem to stock an XL size helmet and a little reluctant to buy online in case its too big. Any ideas of where I could try one on? Also any opinions on the best/comfiest of the different ranges of helmets?

Where have you been looking to try on helmets? I'd say the O'Neills factory shop on Long Mile Road in Dublin would have a good selection, but O'Neills do make their own helmet now, and I don't like the look of it (could be fine I suppose). Elvery's in Nassau St usually have a decent selection, or else go to a club shop (not sure what county you're in, but a big enough hurling club should have helmets for sale, often cheaper than elsewhere).

Personal preference would be the Mycro, but I haven't tried a new Cooper yet. The Azzurri ones are terrible I think, because they have an extra bar at the top of the guard that serves no safety purpose I can identify, and that goes right across your eyeline, and makes it very difficult to catch ball or anything. Also thought it was a little bit tighter round the head. Haven't worn a Marc either, but it seems to have the same guard design I think.

Cheers for that, based in Dublin so will give those places a try.

Was actually looking around for clubs and ye look to have a nice setup. Have ye started back training yet?

It would be great to have you, we always like to see new faces coming down! We haven't started back training officially yet (although a few lads have been doing various things like basketball and squash). We start back on Feb 4th, on the all-weather in Stepaside. It will move to Bushy Park later in the year once there's a bit of a stretch in the evenings.

Reason for the late start is our experience that the season is very long, and overtraining in January can lead to a bit of burnout later on. Our season only ended in December this year!

Does anyone have any preference on which helmet is better or are they much the same? The club has o'neills helmets for 55 bones. not bad.
