I want to get one of the aforementioned, just for the craic, ye know yerslf like. Just to have an extra aul category on the license and so I can have an excuse to renew it for the new fancy card one. If I manage to find cheaper lessons and test fees in the North, can I do it there? Or do I need to be resident withing the north / (UK) and have a UK PPS number in order to sit a test there?

Can I apply to have anything else added to my license without a test? I currently have B and W and I passed a car test. Cheers folks.

Edit: I'm not too from from the aul border.

i'm not too sure regarding the north options, but i'd imagine, you will have to do your test here. if you worked up there, and had a uk pps number, that might be different.
as to which license to add, i go with one you might need, or gain a few bob from in the future, C license in my opinion. the bike is quiet expensive if your starting from scratch, and long drawn out too. and i don;t think bike courier companies hire too many green horns!!
C license, and you'll be on your way to an EC fairly handy after that!

    good luck, and safe driving!

Are you serious? It's not as simple as just getting them for the craic OP, it takes alot of study and lessons to acquire such categories not to mention the thousands of €€€€'s.

In order to take a test in the north you have to be resident there and you cannot add that category to an Irish driving licence. So you will have to do your test down south if you want to get the new "Card" which doesn't come cheap these days .i.e IBT, CPC, €40-€50ph for truck/bus lessons.

And no you can't get anything else added to your licence without another test, in fact in the Uk you don't even get the "W" category after passing the car test. So you're already one up on the UK!

Personally if you're doing it just to get the new card I'd hang on to my few shillings. My bike licence cost me the guts of 1k and my truck 1.5k and I wouldn't of paid all that just to get the new card.

You should check up on RSA.ie and it will explain all the things you have to do to acquire these categories, the car is a walk in the park compared to them.

If you do the test cheaper in the North you'll end up with the UK paper and CC licence. If you drive outside the UK you'd need to carry them both. The UK C/D tests are harder than ours and I think we have an easier A test, we have DA now so there's no benefit from doing the UK A test.

If you really want a CC type licence you can just wash your old one and pay.

Exactly. If your old licence is 'lost' or 'damaged' you can apply for the new credit-card licence.
