Cantilever brake - Road wheel compatability

I have a 2006 hybrid with cantilever brakes like ones on top of this webpage:
    http://jail.sine.com/sheldonbrown/sheldonbrown.com/canti-direct.html

I bought new road wheels for the bike. The new wheels have a 9mm braking surface/rim as opposed to the original wheels 11mm or 12mm rim height.

My old brake blocks (brake pads) are too high for the new wheels - i.e. when brakes are applied, the brake block overlaps the rim or hits the tyre.

i bought new shorter brake blocks in a shop assuming they'd be perfect:
    http://bbbcycling.com/bike-parts/brake-shoes/BBS-16T

the braking surface on these after a little wear will develop to 10mm or 11m in height - which is also not suitable.

i think i am looking for cantilever brake blocks with 7mm or 8mm braking surface but cannae find any.

am i confused or do they exist any ideas!?!?

    just for clarity:

i was stoopid enough to go buy road wheels for my hybrid. i got road wheels that are too thin.
thinner wheel = smaller braking surface.

cant get cantilever brake pads narrow enough for the new rims.

gonna try caliper style brake pads on my cantilever brakes.

i'm bringing the word 'hybrid' to another level

hopefully it'll draw some of the attention away from my aero helmet ;)

Are you sure you're installing the pads correctly? And when you say you fitted 'road wheels' do you mean wheels witha 700c rim diameter? And were the old wheels the same diameter? Because if you fitted 700c wheels on a bike designed for 26inch mountain bike wheels then you won't be able to make rim brakes fit.

Ye i'm positive i'm installing pads correctly. Also got a second opinion to confirm i wasnt going mad.

    Old wheels were 700C x X.
    New wheels are 700C x Y - (Y being thinner than X).

the brake pad is perfectly aligned with the wheels braking surface. only prob is brake pad surface is too fat/high.
