2002 VW Bora wiper problem (intermittent!)

    Hi all,

I have a Bora in for repair with a suspected wiper fault. The owner said that the wipers often stop working randomly, and sometimes stop in the middle of the windscreen. Stopping the car for a while and taking the keys out of the ignition sometimes helps.

I presumed that this was a motor or transmission fault with the wiper assembly. I stripped it all out this afternoon and couldn't find the fault. All the linkages are perfect, the motor is perfect, and the transmission is nice and loose.

I opened the motor and all looks good inside too. When I twist the copper vanes inside it reads a small voltage on a multimeter so its all good. The transmission moves well when I move the vanes inside the motor too, there is no resistance at all.

So, the wipers were working perfectly. The battery ready 12.7V stopped, and 14.7 running so the alternator is fine too.

All the wires that I can trace from the wiper motor are nice and firm, and the fuse is well seated.

Can anyone suggest what I might be missing?

    Thanks,

    Ken

When the wipers stop working, do the washers stop too?

If so then a faulty bonnet catch/switch could be the fault as the wipers/washers on VAG models won't work if the bonnet is open.

Ah, that's why my feckin wipers smack of the bonnet when I start it up with the bonnet open.

    Hi,

I coudn't test the washers, as the fault could not be replicated!

I'm pretty sure there is no bonnet switch on the bora. I couldn't find it, and the elsawin software makes no mention it in the bonnet or bonnet lock assembly diagrams.

In the end I replaced the relay for the wipers. It was pretty much the only thing between the wipers and the battery that could be at fault. Main dealers quoted 56 for the part, scrap quoted 5!

Hopefully that has the problem solved now...wait and see I guess!

scratch that, just found reference to that in the circuit diagrams. Dammit, I hope it was the relay now! If it comes to it would cutting the wire and joining it bi-pass the switch?
