Original Phat 60GB fried GPU - Retrieving save game files..?

    Hi guys,

My beloved PS3, which I purchased on the very day the console came out in Ireland (March, 2007), has overheated, the GPU is now not able to produce any picture and there is no signal coming to my hdtv.

The console was repaired last year when it got the yellow light of death, got a full reball done. Was working fine until last night. Although I will admit, the air coming out of the console would be quite hot at times.

Anyway, I have decided not to repair the console and I intend on purchasing one of the new super-slim ones, with the 12GB storage. I don't need the 500GB one, I can find some standard sata drive lying around and I will throw that into it.

I am just asking, is there any way I could retrieve my save game files off my 60GB hdd? It's not too big a deal if I can't, just wondering.

You sure the GPU is gone? It may be some problem with the HDMI port. Have you tried connecting it with scart/rgb. If you got picture this way you could back up your data and move it to a new PS3. Had the launch model myself but unfortunately it packed in 3 years ago. €650 for a machine that only lasted 2 and a half years  You done well to get this long out of it:p

Yeah I checked that using a scart lead, no picture. The PS3 does turn on, but does not produce the blue light. But it doesn't produce the yellow light and turn off either (like the YLOD issue).

It turns on, has a single green light and just stays like that. Also my samsung hdtv does detect something is connected via the HDMI port but when you select the source, it states 'No Signal'.

I believe it is the GPU as I was watching Lord of the Rings (the return of the king) last night and the screen suddenly froze and then produced a whole load of coloured dotted lines like you normally see on a PC/laptop when the graphics card fails. (I know, because I had a laptop which had the GPU fry in it twice!).

So my save files are non-retrievable?

Where is the cheapest place to buy a new Super-slim PS3?

Gamestop had an offer last week for the slim at less than 200Euro...
Not sure if its still on offer though, one of their hardware deals. Not sure about the super slim though.

Yeah I must go to Gamestop someday so, just to see what they currently have on offer near me.
I know they have some 2nd hand ones, but I am inclined to go new, so I know that the console has not been used for long periods of time with poor ventilation.

I have 2 spare 160GB sata laptop hdds, so I don't need one with a hdd, the 12GB super-slim seems to be best suited for me. But they are around €230, which is alot in my opinion.

I take it you resetted the consoles video settings by holding down the power button at start up and waiting for the beeps before trying to see if you got picture through the scart connection???

As for your files, I remember in one of the firmware updates they included an option where you could link two consoles together with an ethernet cable to transfer data. I'm sure you'd find a few videos on it on youtube. Hope this helps ...

Well i tried to put the console in safe mode, which is a process slightly difference that resetting video output (which i know how to do, did it before many times). The console may have entered safe mode but I still cannot see what is happening. Now when you hold down the power button, those secondary beeps do not sound, literally no sound...wait for about 15 seconds and the console just turns off.

But I will try it again with the scart connected up and try the video reset process, I doubt it will work but I suppose its worth a try. :)

So if I connect up another PS3 to it using an ethernet cable, how will my ps3 be viewed in the other? Or does it appear as a storage device?

This link is a quick video about data transfer between two consoles. Looks like you will need to be able to see picture from your original console though :(

How long was the warranty on the reball?

    A Year.

But I thought the reball was of the CPU not GPU, I thought that my current issue wouldn't fall under its warranty.

Not sure, but I'd ring them & find out
