Taxed OTR cars with no NCT

How difficult would it be for the Powers-that-be to simply send fines in the post to anyone with a taxed car and out-of-date NCT ?

I'm sure thats what they would do in the UK and it would solve the problem of the huge number of cars driving round without an NCT

I think they have to prove the car was in use on public roads for NCT anyway, after all you could have a car in the shed with no NCT and a blown engine, turbo etc

They don't, I drove around London for a for a few months with no mot but with tax as I was moving back home and didn't bother doing it.

well, there would be an appeal process for that, with the onus on the owner to prove it was off the road, maybe an extension of the proposed SORN motor tax systemwould cover that angle...

i'd say you were lucky not to have got an ANPR hit.

I was driving on some of the busiest roads in the UK, driving through central London and trips out to stansted etc for about 3 months so there mustn't be as much ANPR around as we are lead to believe.

Ive driven around there too (Central London, to Birmingham, to Wales) when buying cars with no MOT, nothing happened to me or the PO.

    Changes to legislation.
National databases for motor tax and NCT that can interact and take action.
Appropriate safeguards in place for one such database to be used by the private sector.
Easy to use appeals process for when mistakes get made.

Yay, Lets bring in another stupid law that won't be enforced.

    What's it going to achieve?

Why not just charge everyone so?

You do know that just because cars are taxed does not mean they are on the road? And maybe the reason for no Nct is because of being on a long waiting list for a test. Without proper proof, sending out a fines would be nothing short of idiocy.

You could have a partial point.

Is there still crazy queues for NCT's ?

A friend of mine rang up and got one for early feb. Another person I know rang the same day and was given a date in mid march so it's luck of the draw really.

Why would the country invest money into a system that lines the pockets of a private company?

The NCT is hardly the most thorough of vehicle exams, I've seen plenty of cars get through it that shouldn't have.

It would make more sense for the government to invest that money into showing how preventative maintenance can potentially save you money and/your life.

Why would you want a system where you have to prove that you are innocent rather than the state having to prove that you are guilty?

That would be abused and would also end up costing you money, time etc!

no NCT doesn't really affect the rest of us, where as no TAX or Insurence is a much bigger issue.

I've never seen any aspect of a cars safety or performance effected by the lack of an up to date bit of paper in the window.

I don't believe an nct guarantees anything either as people do all sorts to pass, quick fixes etc. I know as I've had quick fixes done myself to get a car through the test and seen plenty of people doing things like borrowing tyres etc for the day of the test.

If you took your time to read my post above you would see that some people have to wait a month or more for an nct date. Just because you got one in a fourtnight doesnt mean that others will. All test centers have different waiting lists.

And an NCT date is such a surprise that it's not possible to plan a month in advance or to check up on availability in different centres.....

Some people only have the choice of one or two centres and most people don't book a month in advance because they don't expect such a delay.

There is no delay. Take the earliest available date at the centre that suits you, and keep checking online for cancellations - you'll have a test within 24 hours.

Usually you might get a test within 24 hours but not always, Sometimes you just have to wait though.

I'd be in favour of more ANPR usage too. I think in general though, an out of date NCT isn't to do with the fact that a vehicle is dangerous, just that the driver hasn't booked it in early enough, or are afraid of failing on emissions or something.

What is it now, some massive fine and 5 points for no NCT? I think that's a bit much really. Sure, fine people €50 for not booking on time, but only dole out the 5 points and big fine if there's a genuine saftey issue with the vehicle.

I have never heard of anyone ever getting points for no nct. Normally it is a fine of around 200 euro.
