    Hi,

Was out yesterday and my smartphone got water damaged through a zip bag in the saddle bag so its time to invest in a GPS cycling computer.

Im thinking about a Garmin edge 500 with the HRM and Cadence Bundle, is there any other model I should consider?
    What I require.
    GPS.
    HR and Cadence measurement.
    Screen displays that are configurable.
    Meters climbed.
    Water resistant.
    Just need it for cycling.

I dont need maps displayed on the device.

    Handtec €238
    Wiggle €249
    chainreactioncycles €245
What is the best crowd to order from as they are all around the same price?

There is a new model out now/soon - the 510 so I'd expect prices for the 500 to become quite competitive.
A lot of people on here have used Handtec but I think that was to do with price. I personally have used CRC and wiggle as well as bike24 and they are all good, so I'd go with the best price you can get. There are sales on everywhere.
Amazon might be worth a look too

handtec charge shipping, when i bought mine (a few years ago they were significantly cheaper so i price matched them against evans (who do free shipping to ireland) , Although evans shipping takes ages.

big difference now i sthat theres more competitition on price

Chain reaction had a private sale with the 500 costing €218. If you ever bought off them you should have gotten an email

Never bought off CRC, will have a seach this evening when I get home from work for promotional codes for the sites.

I take it for what I require there is not much point in spending €120+ extra for the 510?

The 500 is brilliant and is available now and I'm really pleased with it. The 510 has wireless uploads to your PC, and touch screen (not sure how useful) and live tracking so that your wife can follow your progress on sportives to make sure that her and the kids can be in the right place to cheer you on at several points in the day ( that's what I'm telling mine when she buys one for my birthday). Alternatively she could just tell me to get lost.

The 510 is an incremental upgrade. It has a lot of "nice to haves" on it, but I think very few people who already have a 500 would see any benefit in grabbing the 510.

The primary feature of the 510 appears to be connectivity. So while the 500 is pure recording device, the 510 can access the web via your mobile and can do things like give you a weather alert, let you know if other riders are near you, and so on. The 510 can also sync with Garmin Connect/strava etc through your phone, handy if you don't have a computer at home.
Battery life is improved by about 10%, but unless you're planning a multi-day event with no access to electricity, the battery on the 500 is more than enough.

I'd wait till the 510 comes out before buying the 500. The price for the 500 seems to have gone up after Xmas but should tumble when the 510 is released.

    Just the unit. No sensors

    Any advance on €165?

Both iafstore and bikeINN have the base units for around this price.

What about LBSs - any doing any clearance offers on the 500? Cycle Surgery in Dundrum are showing a 25% discount on the 500 and 800 range but still want €193 plus change for the Edge 500. Garmin themselves are showing the 500 at around €200 full list price (169 Sterling) so 25% discount should come in around €150!?!

I'd buy locally if I could, I had one go faulty and replaced under warranty. Took a few weeks. The replacment is starting to play up now.

TBH with these it's quite straightforward to return stuff to Garmin in the UK - local retailers may choose to do this before offering a replacement anyway and depending on the retailer it may take some time to get sorted.

The 705 used to have a bit of a reputation for going wrong just before they went out of warranty and I think quite a few around here (including me) managed to pick up brand new ones under warrantly directly from Garmin
