Got myself a bit of a dilemma. Looking at buying an rx8 and don't really trust most if them that havnt been rebuilt yet due to the problems they have.

I was thinking of buying one and rebuilding it myself. I am a mechanic but never have worked on a rotary engine so kinda cautious about it. Anyone know of any places who do rebuilds in the rep? And what kinda money you would be talking to get one done?

Heard alot about a guy called Eddie Doyle but can't find where he works or numbers if anyone could help with that?

For advice try irishrotary.com or rx8ownersclub.co.uk. There's a lot of info on both sites.

Eddie Doyle has a good rep but is in Wexford. But there's another guy in Palmerstown who does them. A rebuild due to poor compression is more straightforward than one for a piston engine but you'd need to be very compotent to complete it. Also main bearings need doing more often than not. The rebuild kit is over 600stg from Mazda I think.

They're a good car tho, still enjoying mine.

Thanks lads will have a look at them sites tonight and see what's involved.

Ferris has yours hadto have any major work done? I'm guessing that kit is genuine Mazda parts and can be got from a dealer?

I also hear it drinks petrol. What kinda mileage are you doing in yours?

I've had mine only 5 months and have only cahnged the coils. So no major work done at all.

I only know what I've read on forums about engine rebuilds. There's a few specialists who can get bits cheaper than Mazda will sell them. The rx8 was big in the states so its possible to get parts cheaper from there. Heres a rebuild thread.

They completely drink petrol, I don't really measure it but its under 25mpg. Figure 350km from a 60L fill.

Yea I might look into that If I get one that needs work. I heard they had a drink problem alright but I guess it's something I'd Hafto deal with. Not the type of car you buy to economical lol. Thanks though. How much the coils set you back ?

genuine mazda coils and leads were 160euro + duty from the US off ebay. Not too bad but they need doing every 30k miles or so. Good coils, leads and sparks are essential to the rotary. Saves the cat from burning out and helps with starting.

If you buy the uprated coils, you won't have to change them again, let alone after 30k miles. Also consider upgrading your leads to Magnecor, available on Mazda Rotary Parts

Rotary FX is a great US site for parts but beware, there is excise duty on them if they're nabbed at customs. I was caught a few times but it still works out alot cheaper than buying from a dealer here.

I mainly got spark plugs from them - $84 for 4 compared to €300 from a dealer here

Cost of a full rebuild is about €2.5-3k according to irishrotary.com, which is comparable to a price for a full rebuild here in the UK.

The cheapest you will get a rebuild here in the UK is for £2250 from rotary revs in West Yorkshire, that covers everything even if rotars, housings, irons or eshaft needs replacing.

From what I have read on rx8ownersclub.co.uk, a rebuild is quite do-able even with a small amount of mechanical knowledge.
