Smelly stinky fridge?

There is an awful stench coming from an apparently spotless fridge here which the little woman has cleaned several times - it's actually the fridge at her place which is why she's cleaning it! :D

She has used Detol Kitchen Cleaner and she left a lemon in it for a day to try absorb the smell.

I have read on other threads that baking soda left in a cup for a few days to absorb the smell is the way to go, but also if that does not work to try active charcoal.

Can the fridge be used with active charcoal resting in a pan at the bottom of the fridge for a few days or will all the food taste and smell of charcoal?

If you have any other suggestions please share them.

If relevant, she has a big freezer out the back so the icebox of this small fridge was in need of a defrosting for at least a year and the bad smells only emanated from the fridge since.

Is there anyway there's a problem with the drain? We have the tool to make sure it's unblocked and it is...

Make up a paste of bicarb with some water and spread it all over the inside - leave overnight and just wash off with plain water. Might work getting rid of a bad smell.

chop a few onions in half and leave them in there for a day or two

Check the back of the fridge, some have a tray for excess water to drain into before it evaporates away. ;)
