Brought my car in for the test yesterday and it passed on everything except the horn didn't work.

Came as a bit of a surprise, tried to remember when I last used it and as far as I recall it was about 3 months ago!

Anyway the car is a 2006 Passat estate, so I had a quick look on ebay to price a new horn and it's not bad at around a tenner delivered.

But there seems to be just as many listings for horn relays as there are for horns which makes me wonder if it might be the relay rather than the horn itself?

As the weather is bad and I have no where under cover to have a look at it I haven't had a look yet to see if it is something obvious like a fuse, a bad connection or a broken cable.

So when I do go at it what is my best plan of attack in terms of trying to determine whether it is the horn or the relay or something else that is faulty assuming it's not a fuse or connection?

Any advise or pointers greatly appreciated.

Location of the fuse box; SSP340 The Passat 2006 Electrical System - Volkspage

Here's pictures of the Passat 2008 fuse boxes, but I don't know if it's the same for the 2006 Passat. Someone here may know, though.

The first thing I would do is to get a multimeter/bulb and test for power at the power wire to the horn.Either get a glamorous (or not) assistant to operate the horn button while you test at the horn, or else position the bulb/meter where you can view it from the drivers seat.Horns can be wired either by been earthed through the horn button, or through the normal way, i.e power through the horn button and earth at the horn.
If you have power there, then either the horn is gone or else a bad earth.if there is no power at the horn, then check at the relay. But remember there will only be the trigger/activating power when you press the button. You could also run a temporary jump from the terminals at the relay that are labelled 30 and 87 to check if the horn sounds when you press the button. If so the relay is gone.

Actually it should click when you press the button when the relay is connected back up.
