What would be the best route from Tuam to belfast by car? how long will it take and do I need ID crossing into NI? Going for a family break in a few weeks
    Thanks

The most straightforward & easiest to follow is the motorway (m6) from galway to Dublin, then take the M1 from Dublin to Belfast. There is a quicker & cheaper way of getting there but if this is your first time making the journey its probably the best. It should take about 5-6 hrs depending on how fast you drive & no you dont need ID

Shortest route is N17 to Sligo and A4 through Dunagannon. It would be 4 hours of poor enough roads and plenty of towns and villages to negotiate. The easiest route and not much longer would be M6 M4 M50 M1. It's motorway all the way and no towns to drive through. There will be tolls though (approx €10). Should be able to do in in 4 hours handy with no stops.

UK and Irish Nationals do not require ID but it is mandatory to carry your Driving Licence if driving. Other nationalities require a passport/national id card.

Another option is to take the M6 as far as junction 10 on the Athlone bypass and take the cross country route through Mullingar and Kells before joining the M1 just south of Dundalk.

It doesn't take that much longer, takes you off the tedium of the motorway for a while and saves almost €7 on tolls.

ID is not required to cross the border. (Although it is compulsory for motorists to carry a driving licence in the Republic.) In fact your probably won't notice the border at all !

One way you'll know you're in the north is by seeing road signs in miles rather than kilometres and different road markings, (EG a continuous white line marking the hard shoulder rather than a broken yellow line in the Republic.)

The border. In this Google Maps image the Google car with the camera is in the Republic heading north while the black VW about 20 metres in front is in Northern Ireland !
