As title says I have booked a multi centre holiday in USA with lastminute.com. I have received my email from lastminute and am looking for some help please.
We travel dub-heathrow-san francisco with BA.
The email says check in required. Do I check in online with our bags or will i check in at dublin airport with our barg? We also have a 2hr 25min layover will this be enough time to clear US immegration?
Next leg of the hol is sanfran-san diego with US Airways operated by United Airlines. We will have to check in bags and ourselves for this leg and I am wondering if I do this now or in the airport. ? If i can do it now which airline do i do it with.
Next leg of the journey is San Diego - Las Vegas with American Airlines operated by skywest airlines as american eagle with 1hr 25min change in LA. My question is the same as previous one and also is 1hr 25min enough to change planes
The last leg is Las Vegas to Dublin with BA. Do I need to check in bags and ourselves for this also.
Apologies for all the questions but this is all new to me
    Thank you in advance

You really need to ask lastminute.com for answers to most of those questions.

But if you really want an answer, I'd check-in with the bags in Dublin airport and ask the clerk at the desk about sending the bags all the way through but you will have to reclaim the bags in SF as that's where you will clear US customs so you have to have your bags with you.

On US Immigration, you will do this in San Francisco as you can't do it in Heathrow.

You will check in at Dublin Airport and the bag will be checked through to San Francisco. If the routing is Dublin -> Heathrow -> San Fran you will clear immigration and customs in San Francisco.

You will need to pay for bags with United and check in with United. (you may be able to weasle your way out of paying for bags but very unlikely. If you get the United PNR you should be able to pay for the bags online.

Check in and pay for bags with American Airlines. (They might have a seperate American eagle counter, I'm not sure as haven't flown with AA in years.

You will need to check in at the airport but bags will be free.

You may be able to check in online, but sometimes this just doesn't work with bookings made via travel agencies. You'll have to go to the desk anyway to drop your bags, so if it doesn't work, they can check you in there. As said, you will clear US immigration in San Francisco, not Dublin or London. 2 hours 25 will be plenty of time to transfer at Heathrow.
Next leg of the hol is sanfran-san diego with US Airways operated by United Airlines. We will have to check in bags and ourselves for this leg and I am wondering if I do this now or in the airport. ? If i can do it now which airline do i do it with.

As advised, you'll check in with United. You won't be able to do it now. Most airlines will only open online check-in 24 hours before departure. You may also have to pay checked luggage fees on your domestic flights, so do be aware of that.
Next leg of the journey is San Diego - Las Vegas with American Airlines operated by skywest airlines as american eagle with 1hr 25min change in LA. My question is the same as previous one and also is 1hr 25min enough to change planes

The American Eagle flights operate from the same terminal in LA, so you should be fine. If both flights are American Eagle, you'll only have to walk from one gate to another. If the second is American Airlines (and not Eagle), a short bus ride will bring you from the American Eagle gates to the main American airline terminal. Again, you may be charged for the checked bags.
The last leg is Las Vegas to Dublin with BA. Do I need to check in bags and ourselves for this also.

Check in with BA, drop bags with BA, collect bags in Dublin :)

Thank you folks for the replies its very much appreciated.
So just to make things clear we arrive at the BA desk in dublin airport and check in all the way to san fran. and we do the same thing for the Las Vegas - Dublin flight - do nothing online
For the internal flights we need to check in ourselves and bags online 24 hours before we travel
    Is this correct
    Thank you

Yes for the Dublin to San Francisco and Las Vegas to Dublin check in at BA desk in the airport and that would be that.

For domestic flights you can check in online if you wish but there is no need to. You can check in at the airport and pay for bags there

For Dublin to London, it depends. Check your booking. If your flight number is BA 8XX then you will go to the BA desks in Terminal 1 at Dublin. If it is BA 5XXX, then your flight to Heathrow is operated by Aer Lingus and you will check in with Aer Lingus in Terminal 2. Otherwise, you're pretty much on the money.

Thanks folks for all the info but I have another question.
On our last leg home we fly LV to Gatwick with BA and then Gatwick to Dublin with BA operated by aer lingus. Our checked bags will go straight to Dublin but what is the situation with hand baggage. BA allow 23kgs hand baggage but AL only allow 10kgs. Will we be allowed the BA allowance or not? The flight number is a BA flight number
    Thanks again

Usually you're allowed the larger allowance on a single ticket, but ring BA or Aer Lingus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

Hand baggage is by the operators rules..so you can only bring the Aer Lingus hand baggage allowance on their flight. 23kgs would be an enormously heavy bit of hand luggage anyway!

Rang BA and they wern not too helpfull, the said I should talk to aerlingus.
I had a look on AL website and I cant find a number or email for my query.
I have tried various numbers but the options don't suit
Would anyone have a number please

    Ummm..http://www.aerlingus.com/help/contactus/

I'm not sure what you think calling them will do (or BA). Their allowance is pretty clear, so just make your your bag doesn't exceed it, or you risk them asking you to check it in when you reach the gate at Gatwick. It may not happen, if it's small enough, but the rule is there.

I can't see you getting away with above the carry-on limit just because you've come from the US.

The carry-on limit for any given route reflects the actual capacity of the plane you're flying on and for each flight they make an estimate of the weight to be carried (bodies and baggage) based on the gender breakdown of the passengers and an average carry-on weight, that's what determines how much fuel they put in the plane.

Where the passengers are coming from does not get factored into the equation so I would plan on observing their weight limit as if you were flying on that route only and not as part of a longer trip.

Sorry to disrupt thread but similar question regarding booking. If I book on ebookers Dublin to New York but there is a stopover in heatrow what happens if my plane is delayed? As it is part of one booking do they wait? Or as its one booking but different airlines do they not?

If the flight is from Heathrow to NYC then I assume it's a major carrier in which case they will sort you out and put you on a later flight with no charge.

They won't hold a long haul flight departing from a major airport for you. Heathrow couldn't function if B747s and A330s and similar planes got held up waiting for incoming passengers on connecting flights.

Actually found a cheaper route. Going to fly to Miami but flight goes Dub->JFK->Miami

There is a 1hr 40 min stopover in JFK. Going to book this tonight. My question is: Do I need to clear customs at JFK when transferring to Miami or do I clear them down in Miami? Also will be bags be checked straight through or do they need to be rechecked at JFK?

    Thanks.

You clear both Immigration and Customs for most, if not all, flights to NY from Dublin now. (Even if not, you clear at your first point of entry in the USA [which for you would be JFK] but that's not going to be an issue).

This means nothing to clear when you to the US, your bags are checked through. You simply collect at Miami like any other domestic passenger and walk out the door.

So 1hr 40mins would be enough time to get my connecting flight?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 240 ✭✭kenkin

Does the fact that it is a BA flight operated by aer lingus not make a difference. The flight has a BA number

No it is an Aer Lingus flight. Exact same if you booked direct with them.

Remember if you're travelling on a multi leg trip within the United States with the same carrier they will always take care of you if a flight is delayed meaning you miss your connection.

And the chances are if its a popular route there will be many more flights later (Although at night things obviously slow down).

Should be, depends on the airlines involved. You may, or may not, have to change terminals which can lenghten the process obviously. Even with that in mind, 1.40 should be ok if you are preclearing in Dublin.

I pulled the trigger on the flights! they are with American airlines all the way through!fingers crossed all goes smoothly

You'll be arriving/departing from the same terminal then, so you should be fine.

Or... throw yourself on Fate and relax and enjoy the trip.

    You'll have a great time.

I spoke to an AL air hostess yesterday and she told me that BA rules apply because its a BA ticket

Folks thank again for all the help.
As regards our hand luggage I finally got a definitive answer from AL today which is that AL will honour the baggage allowance of BA.
