thinking of getting a 1.6hdi version of this car, the Passat I have has given me terrible trouble so I think its time for a change, anyone know much about these, common faults etc?

You'll get a lot of reports here about dodgy electrics and maybe with good reason, but I can report that I had a 206 and a 307 at the same time in the family and neither put a foot wrong in many years, and they had bad reputations too. You can get lucky or unlucky. I had BMWs which are seen as more reliable but I could tell you stories about climbing in windows whem the doors stopped working etc!! That said the BMWs were beautiful to drive. I have faith in Peugeot so much I bought a 406 coupe this week 13 years old which is as full of electrics as Peugeots get and 1 heated seat doesnt work but everything else does. Its just a car I always wanted to own. I've no experience of the 407 but in my experience dont let preconceptions of any brand put you off, there are good and bad examples of every car out there, just get anything looked over and dont rush in there are loads of 407s out there you can easily find a great one. Peugeots also most comfortable cars I've ever sat in ( except 206 but in fairness thats a cheap car to begin with). I nearly forgot I had an old 306 last year for a few months when I was between cars and that was very reliable too!

The rule with the 407 is to buy as new as possible.

A 406 and 407 are not comparable as regards quality. The 406 was leagues ahead.

I do like the 407 but I don't think I could do it to myself

cheers guys, yea I had a 406 years ago and was a good car. owned a 607 a few months back and it was just awful, so many problems to list!

The 1.6hdi is not a trouble free engine. Expect either turbo or dpf problems depending on how you drive it

If your buying a s/h 407 1.6 hdi with 90k mls+ then find out if the particle filter was replaced and additive topped up...the dealers charge around €800 to carry out this job.
tbh it can be done for less than half in an independent garage...:)

Its also very impotant that there is a full service history with the car....if it has not been serviced at/within its service intervals and incorrect oil used then there could be trouble with turbos etc down the road..:(

As ba_barabus said above the 407 has'nt got the quailty ride and reliability of the 406's but that goes for alot of modern cars today.
Saying that the 407's have very good road holding qualities and are comfortable when cruising on smooth roads/motorways.

Another check on a s/h 407 is to ensure that your getting heat out both pass/drivers sides....heater flaps behind the dash can break and its a big job to to replace them.
Abs sensors tend to fail...also so ask if any were replaced.
Other than that if its pre-08 then balljoints tend to fail every 40-50k mls.

i know i have listed the down sides of the 407's but tbh every make/model have there down sides.
At least your now aware of the downsides of the 407's..:D

You could pick up a well specced 407 with autolights/wipes/cruise control for small money.
    best of Luck..;)

Had the awful experience of one for 2 years. Electrics are the main issue followed by engine trouble. Wouldn't bother if i was in your position. break your heart it will !.

    What's your budget and requirements?

I wouldn't totally discount the 407 but if I was considering one I'd search for a good one.

I'd also consider an 06/07 Laguna for value

well was budgeting around 3k, got a 02 Passat T(DI) but sunk about 600 euros into it the last few months so had enough of it!

The 407 are a comfortable car with good handling and look good too imo. However if it's reliabilty your after and low maintainance costs, cross the 407 off your list straight away because it has neither.

God no. Their cheaper than other cars for a reason!! It's no coincidence that Renault dropped the Laguna an replaced it with the Fluence (and a 5 year warranty!!!)

They replaced the Laguna with the ah....the Laguna 3. They have just stopped selling them in righthander drive markets or they will soon. Never owned one though.

Quality is a lot higher in 06/07 model years but the Laguna name was in the mud at that stage. Hence a bargain can be had. Mind you the dci can still lunch it's turbo but what diesel engine doesn't.

As pointed out it was replaced by the Laguna III not the Fluence which incidentally isn't actually a Renault at all.

Wasn't aware of the new generation Laguna - apologies.

Anyway I found the Laguna to be a shockingly bad car and expensive to keep.

Keycards and tyre pressure sensors were a disaster. There was always some sort of light on on the dash.

Mind you I never had an ounce of bother with the engine! 130bhp/6 speed model which was great to drive.

i think im gonna take a chance on a 407 tho, honestly ive had a pain in my rocks with the 190 euro quarterly roadtax of the Passat, high insurance costs, and 40mpg compared to the 55mpg with the 407

I don't think any of that will change with the 407.

Tax will go down slightly but thats about it.

As for 55mpg, that's pretty hard to achieve

The cost of tax and the diffrence in mpg will be the least of your worries and costs if you buy a 407. They are a disaater waiting to happen on wheels.

Probably end up getting high 40's but not 55

I don't have personal experience with the 1.6 HDI but I've heard many say it's gutless compared to the 2.0 which has much better torque delivery at low revs (and a lot more torque in general in the versions available in the 407). The tax will be higher but they should be cheaper for better spec too. I'd expect around 40-45 MPG for either in real life.

As an owner of a 407 1.6 hdi i can verify that it averages between 48-52 mpgs.
With the vvt turbo the torque kicks in around 1800 rpms and pulls well up 4000 rpms.
Op..your best bet is to make a list of the cars/engines etc your thinking about and go out there and take them for a test drive....;)
