Replace screen, buy new laptop, or scrap?

    Ok, so my 2 year old (but still behaving reasonably well) HP DV6 laptop has met screen first with the floor. Screen is self evidently bricked. As a totally blameless bystander, I have now got my sulking out of my system. Well not entirely, but the laptop is now plugged into tv, so I can type this.

    My options as I see it are;

    a) buy new screen. I've never fitted one of these before. I presume I could just shop from this list and give it a go?

    http://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=hewlett+packard+dv6+screen&_sacat=0&_from=R40

    Looks like €60 plus..but that's assuming that this is do-able for me.

    b) buy entirely new laptop. I was thinking of doing this later in the year..when my credit card bill had recovered from christmas blues. Current laptop manages the few games i throw at it reasonably well, but it is prone to overheating and was slowing a bit. So I had thought of going for bit faster and lighter. I'd prefer to stick to sub-600 budget if i did this. Then i could stick broken laptop next to second tv as a kind of media centre solution.

    c) cannibalize current machine for usable parts and create new super laptop. I could go through adverts/ebay and look for something else in partially working state and merge the two machines?

    Current laptop has 6GB RAM, AMD Phenom II N930 Quad Core Processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, 466 GB Hard Drive.

    I occasionally use it for work, and for that it's a small bit heavy for lugging around the place. I'm not a cutting edge gamer, so it manages fine at the slightly older Steam purchases i have. Otherwise its just music, internet and occasional netflix

    So what do people think is the most economic decision short to mid-term to go for? I'm just fishing for ideas here!

    It's a good specs machine so forget there other ideas,. As for attempting yourself, there are risks..
    You should be able to get that replaced in Dublin for about €100 and with the comfort of a warranty and the joy of knowing you can't mess it up yourself (-;

    here is the service manual

    Be very careful in removing the screen cover as there are lots of clips situated all around the bezel that if you break or bend will make getting the bezel back on a tough job, some of these bezels are stuck onto double sided tape which can make it very awkward if you are not used to doing it.

    You said you were thinking of replacing the laptop later in the year.

    Keep your hundred quid and put it towards that, then remove the screen and keep the laptop connected to your TV - instant Smart TV

    Would agree with this. If you aren't lugging it around plug it into your TV with a HDMI cable and off you go. You could also get a small LCD monitor; many places just throw them out when they receive upgrades, and use that as well.
