That thing looks dangerous, Health & safety would ban it here!
But seriously, there are some fúcked up governments out there!

    http://observers.france24.com/content/20130125-iran-machine-amputating-thieves-finger
One of Iran’s official press agencies published photos showing the public amputation of a thief's fingers on Wednesday. These show a man getting his finger chopped off with a machine resembling a rotary saw.

WARNING: These images may shock viewers.

We contacted many of our Observers in Iran to ask them about this machine. Some of them had heard about it before, but many discovered its existence through these morbid photographs, which were reportedly taken on Thursday. According to the INSA press agency, the man shown getting his finger cut off was charged with robbery and adultery by a court in the southwestern city of Shiraz. He was also accused of being at the head of a criminal organisation. On top of losing one of his fingers, he was sentenced to three years in prison and 99 whip lashes.

Don't ever ask for a 99 mr whippy ice cream in Iran.

All in the name of religious extremism!
Amputation, whipping, and even death by stoning are all legal forms of punishment under Iran’s Islamic penal code.

I know a guy who got convicted of stealing in Iran TWICE. Now all he can steal is doughnuts.

To be fair many people here would be glad to see much of that introduced here, with about the same judicial safe guards in some instances.

Have you read some of the threads about punishing criminals on here lately? Iran looks like Disneyland in comparison.

Well I'm basing it on the hang um high brigade usually found on boards.ie so I'm gonna say crack pots.

That said I'm quite in favour of bringing back flogging and the stocks for quite a few offences. Much cheaper and more effective than a prison sentence.

How ingenious, a machine for chopping off fingers. Leading edge stuff. All the people who came up with axes, knives, swords, guillotines and almost every other machine ever invented etc must be raging they weren't smart enough to come up with one..

It looks like a modified die stamping machine, the sort of thing used to cut out leather pieces used in shoe making or similar.

I dunno. Looks like a fake to me - propoganda stuff. The machine looks too crude, complicated and unnecessary for the task. I'm calling shenanigans.

Could they not get the Chinese to make something better?

I doubt that the R+D budget was that large, unlikely a fake as Iran are more than willing and able to carry out such punishments, but propaganda, yes!
Look at the original article's take on it.
"Publishing these photos is a way to instil fear in the population so as to avoid any protests"

Contacted by FRANCE 24, the spokesperson for Iran Human Rights, Mahmoud Amiry-Moghaddam, who is based in Norway, explains: “What is surprising about this is that not only was this a public amputation, but that photos of it were distributed by official press agencies, and that they showed a machine that we had until yet never seen images of. We have noticed that the authorities have recently being making more and more publicity surrounding cases of corporal punishment. Every time we get closer to an election, the number of these incidents increases. And we’re getting quite close to the presidential election [slated for June]. I believe this is a strategy to instil fear in the population so as to avoid any protests.

Well if the US and their lapdogs hadn't ousted Mosaddegh's democratically elected, secularist, socially liberal government and seeded all power to their pupper the Shah, who then inflicted so much misery upon the population that Islamic fanatics like Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini were able to gain a popular following, the Islamic revolution would never have happened and Iran would be a secular, open country.

Basically, like much of the middle east, western idiocy shaped what exists today.

I'd have put up a picture of some feckin bags of a machine that looked like one wrong move and it would eat you, with a complete numpty operating it who looked like he was on day release. That'd fear em.:D

As long as Mickeys fingers fit in the hole, it'll probably chop em. But then again, so would a big leery lad with a blunt stanley knife. I think they have overinvested in technology on this one.

Id like to point out something I cant quite put my finger on it though.
Why does the guy to the right have a putter in his hand ?
This looks more like a scene from 80's armagh than Iran.
