Thinking of buying a BMW 545i M-Sport E60 4.4 v8, wondering was any owners who be able to advise of any faults which I should look out for, what kind of MPG would one get 60% Motorway 40% primary roads. Service costs etc

My advice - Get an M5.

Wow, are there any of these even in the country?

You might have better luck over on a BMW forum such as bmw-driver.net

MPG for a 4.4L petrol, it's not going to be pretty. It's the N62 engine, same as the 645Ci and the 745i - expect about 25MPG but she'll be a pig in traffic/town driving.

I like them (though only have experience with its predecessor). Lots of easy, smooth power, nice sound, decent MPG.
A far cheaper proposition than M5 ownership (a tuned V10 in the E60) and not meant to be compared, this would be the top 5 series model, the M5 is a separate M car.

Reliability will be the usual E60 BMW problems with any engine and transmission problems as seen in the more popular 740/745i. The 535d and 545i share the same giant brakes which are actually bigger than the previous generation (e39) M5 brakes. And expensive.

Best of luck if you do buy it the BMW 5 series is the best all round car you can buy in my opinion, but be warned just because it is affordable to purchase (presumably!) it will cost as much and in all probabilty more to run than a brand new one. Its what, 80 grand new? But if you want to, go for it but also be warned if things go sour you'll most likely not get rid of it. I had a 530i for 2 years and I dont think I'll ever own a better car. But sure you only live once, go for it

It's worth looking on this forum for specific issues related to the the 4.4 N62 engine:

    http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=114

There is a known issue with a cooling pipe that goes across the top of the engine, there is an aftermarket solution that takes away the need for a massive engine strip down. It still won't be cheap when the pipe does eventually go.
They also report recker cover gaskets going but that's not the worst, very DIYable.
All the other stuff is the same across the e60 range. For exampole a poor battery causes all sorts of electrical performance issues. The seat occupancy sensor in the pasenger seat seem to have a habit of failing.

The 550i is supposed to have a much more reliable engine I read...

Given the choice and budget I would hold out for a clean E39 M5. :)

Would be buying that M5 in a heartbeat if I was in the market for one. Really well looked after by its owner and evolve stage 1 work done :D
