What would you recommend as a setup for satellite connectivity in a new house build. Can you run one cable for both satellite and a home network (cat 5/6) or should they be separate. Any suggestions on how to distribute the signal would be welcome or is it best to have a satellite box per room with tv?

I would start with the traditional setup of co-ax cables to each room, a min of 3 (4 for possbile future use) to the main TV point for terrestrial and satellite (Sky+/Freesat+) watching/recording. For the other rooms a min of 2 cables for terrestrial and sat. All cabling back to a central point in the attic/power room etc.

Also a number of Cat 5/6 cables to each TV point for future connected receivers/home entertainment setup. That way the house will be ready for current and future consumer products.

My brother went with this setup in recent times. Best bit of advice I read once upon a time regarding cabling was better to be looking at it than looking for it.

As far as I know you cannot run a satellite set-top box (stb) from a Cat cable.

What you can do is have a sat dish and a TV aerial outside, run one cable from each to the attic, then split both your sat feed and your Terrestrial Aerial feed in the attic to each room.

This means that you will have two cables going into each room, one carrying your sat feed and one carrying your terrestrial aerial feed. In each room you can then get a combo STB or if your TV is Saorview approved you can use just a sat STB and plug your TV aerial direct into ur TV

You need to determine how many rooms need services, and what functions you need in each room before you can determine the most efficient cabling.

If you want to be able to record from Sat then it would be necessary to have two Sat feeds to that room.

It might be more efficient if a lot of rooms are to be serviced, to use a multiswitch and feed one or two cables (depending on needed functions) to each room. Each of those cables would carry both Sat and DTT signals.

Take time to plan it ...... and as advised, make allowances for possible future needs.

Put all your equipment in one central location, then use hdmi, cat 5/6 and RF cables and magic eyes to control every thing.

Works for me and the misses is not given our about wires, and flats screens are all mounted up of the ground, and full control over all services.

I have, sky plus (HDMI) apple tv HDMI, terr RF, wireless for etc, and cat 5 for future services.

    Regards,
