Looking at modifying my FTO over the next few months.

It's lowered already, due to being a Version R.

N/A engine and want to keep it so, so no supercharging or turbocharging.

I have no idea about how to mod for power, any suggestions?

The FTO is so tuned already from the factory at 200hp, hence why the VR had the same power output, but it really is an amazing engine, other Jap cars from that decade are not as capable, the 2l Nissan Skyline is only out putting around 119 hp, the N/A Silvia of that time 137 hp, MX 5 116 hp and the MR2 was 163 hp. The only NA that could rival it at the time was Honda with the intergra and CTR. Like the examples above, except for breathing mods you wont really see a performance gain unless you went down the Turbo route.

What type of air filter/induction kit has it got?

I've a spare ITG maxogen at home, the actual power gains are probably negligible (maybe 3-4bhp) but it sure does sound sweeter so it gives an illusion of increased power.

In fairness it'll be tough to get any decent gains without going FI.

I've got creative sports manifiold, blueflame enhanced downpipes, de-cat and a mongoose exhaust system. It wasn't cheap and I'd be lucky if I got 10-15bhp increase all things considered.
A proper front mount induction kit might be a good idea for me.

I've removed the air-con too so saved a bit of weight but I've had issues with the air-con bypass belt (i.e it kept coming loose and eventually snapped!)

If I was to do it again, I'd probably just go with an induction kit and a decat, maybe loose the air-con and then try and get some nice light racing seats.
If you still have standard alloys you could try something lighter too.
The Team Dynamics Pro Race series are relatively affordable and lightweight.

ITG filter on my VR already. My GPX has decat and bluflame exhaust and feels less powerful than the VR to be honest. I'm gonna sort an exhaust on the VR first and go from there. If there isn't a lot that can be done, so be it! Thanks for the tips so far!

Weight saving is the way to go on these. I can't see anything significant coming out of breathing mods.

Mine definitely felt livelier after fitting the blueflames

The factory did a great job tuning these from the factory.
As said weight saving and breathing mods are all that can really be done.

fto owners club has a good bunch of guys in it that may be able to help point you in the right direction.

I do know CAMS are available to fit the 6A12 which will be expensive due to the fact you have 2 heads.

There is this old article aboug gains from altered fueling

OK, basically all I can really do is sort out a good exhaust, there isn't really any weight saving I can do without removing stuff I want! Might look into changing the seats for lighter ones, but I doubt I will unless I see something I really like.

Didn't realise there was so little tuning potential!

    Do you need the aircon?

Making it handle better will make it faster too.

Its one of the reasons they didnt become more popular, that and the fact it wasnt RWD meant that alot of the potential customers couldn't tune or drift it which was the Jap car scene around the world was into at the time. I was thinking the GT86 was going to suffer from the same issues; as in the Boxer engine was already tuned heavily and there was not much room in the engine-bay for add ons but we are living in a different age now where there is less alternatives to the GT86 and so people are more willing to try and get more out of it.
