I haven't been to Portugal before and I'd like a recommendation for a resort/hotel please. Somewhere as far as possible from the "Ballymun in the Sun" crowd and a hotel that is more suited to a middle-aged couple than a "family-friendly, Kids Club" place.

    TIA.

Alvor is your place so. Can be a bit too old in March as its so cheap, you'll get a lot of elderly groups of golfers. Any other time is lovely.

    About 50 mins from Faro.

Cascais, about 30 minutes from Lisbon would suit you. Lovely town with plenty of good restaurants and hotels. Hop on the train to visit Lisbon.

Pricey by Portuguese standards but that keeps out the riff raff, ;)

Alvor is a lovely part of the algarve, you can't go wrong there. If you hire a car, vilamoura would be lovely for a day trip....the 'posh' town of the algarve!!
