Shagging in the USA!

Ok, I've learned that it's doesn't mean the same thing here (US) as across the pond and I got a funny story on this.

I was working at a local resort at the front desk when a young lady I was working with got a call from a man that was from UK making a reservations. She explained to him that it was a wonderful time to visit the beach that particular weekend because it was our National Shag Weekend when he was visiting (no, at that time neither of us knew what this meant in the UK, totally innocent.)

Her conversation met with silence from him as she went to explain that there would be shagging contest in the streets and there would be judges! There would be shagging in all the bars, and all levels of participants were welcome.

The man didn't say a lot. We later learned from another guest exactly what "shagging" in the EU meant, our embarrassment met with laughter for hours thinking of the man and what could have possibly be going through his mind during the conversation. ;)

Below is a link to what shagging is where I come from:

Yeah, there's a few words like that that prove George Bernard Shaw's remark about the US & Britain/Ireland being "separated by a common language". Fanny is another one.

Mother was visiting her sister in Australia. Came out of the bathroom and told my cousins that she was just in there rooting around for her lipstick. Cue shocked silence after which much hilarity ensued.

In Australia 'rooting' doesn't mean 'searching'.

    In Australia 'rooting' means '****/masterbating'

    :D

I thought Austin Powers was a fairly popular series of films in the US?

Perhaps the yanks decided not to "educate" the viewers into what the word meant!

They must have been very disappointed with the lack of dancing in the film.

When in a bar in San Francisco, don't loudly announce that you are going out to smoke a fag.

I once watched a film called 'shag' recommended to me by a female acquaintance. I was similarly dissapointed.

You probably shouldn't ask someone if you can bum a fag either.

More of a generational thing. I was in high school when the first movie came out.

Austin Powers movie didn't come out until about 2 years after that happened. We didn't have a clue what shagging meant across the pond. Shag dancing has been popular since the 1950's. What is considered the "home" of Shag dancing is a small beach town called North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

On a similar note, the term y'all use "Yanks" for the US folks is not proper in the Southern States. It goes back to the Civil War. We'uns in the South were always referred to as "Rebels" (think Jeff Foxworthy, Duck Dynasty, Andy Griffith). We still refer to the ppl up north as Yankees, hence a "damn Yankee" is one that moves south and stays. We are all friends mostly (not always) with the transplanted yankees and usually joke with each other about the differences. It's a much slower pace in the South and yes we will close our business when the fish are biting and teachers expect the young'ins to be out of school when hunting season starts. Children 8yo + go shooting (hunting) with their Deddy's and Momma stays home and cooks up a mess of Collard Greens.

The Yankees that move south and try to change things are put in their place pretty fast by the rednecks. No, we don't mind being called rednecks down south, it is what it is. So....I guess the shaggers would also be rednecks.

Ok, skewls out, Fish R biting! ;)

Yep, that is what I was relating to, while considering what the meaning would be to you, asss talk.

 Oh my! Never heard that before, and I'll never say it again, lol.

That (fanny) is also a found name old men nickname their wives, and I don't think they know that is what it means where you are either.

The girlfriend was in Australia. Getting onto a boat the owner asked two Irish girls to remove their thongs. Thongs in Australia are flip-flops. They didn't know that. She said they nearly smacked him!

Strap a Winchester 12G shotgun on Scarlets back, put her in a pair of blue jeans/T-shirt and you would get an accurate reading in your head ;)

The women here are more like Gretchen Wilson than Scarlet, salt air and swamps ~ snakes and gators. In this yard alone I've already sent 3 copperhead snakes to snake heaven...or where ever snakes go when they are headless, lol.

@ blue note: Thongs here were just flip-flops here too until about 10 years ago. They just outlawed them (thong swim suites) on the beaches about 4 years ago. Seemed some folks just didn't realized when they were...uh-hum, well, a bit too big or getting along in years to know when to NOT put them on if you get my drift.

Sometimes there just isn't enough beer in the cooler to make some folks look good when they ain't got enough clothes on!
