    Hi all,

I will be doing the BTW scheme so

I was looking at the Giant Defys today and only difference I noticed was the price... Given just by a quick lift I thought the defy 3 was lighter

Can someone explain the differences as I have the chance to get one of the three at the minute and wanna get the best bang for me buck

Also If there are any other bikes in the same price range that would be better please let me know :D

    Fankssss

Also anyone wanna give me a Ridley Noah for free that would be appreciated ;););)

AFAIK the frame is the same on all three models, the difference in price is because of the different drivetrains and possibly wheels. Check out the (price) differences between Shimano 2300 (8 speed) Sora (9 speed) and Tiagra (10 speed).

forks probaby carbon on the 3, alloy on the 4 or 5, but dunno for certain. that was one difference they used make though across the range a couple years back

Most bike companies choose a name and number for their models and as the number gets smaller, the bike gets better, ie a defy 1 will be better than a Defy 3. You'll have to compare the specs to see how they differ but the groupsets will get better (and more expensive) as will wheels and other bits. Sometimes the changes are quite small so it might take a bit of research

Defy 5 has an alloy frame alloy fork basic shimano 2300 parts,

Defy 4 has an alloy frame carbon fork shimamo 2300 parts 8gears at back

Defy 3 has an alloy frame carbon fork shimano sora parts 9gears at back better quility components,

There website has all the specs: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/defy.3/11498/55822/ (that's the Defy 3)

Generally with Giants, the lower the number the better the spec. So a Defy 1 will be top of the line, Defy 5 entry level and all flavours in between. All have the same frame and fork, so as dancecatz says it's the groupset that differentiates.

    Thanks for the replies

Based on the answers above I think I am going for the Defy 4, although I really want the best available to me which is the 3

it's very unlikely you'd regret buying the 3. The new 9 speed sora shifters look really nice and are a big step up from the ones on the 4 and 5.

That's fine, we're all no Mark Cavendish around here. You'd want to be thinking about €2000 to trigger that angel.

Go for the 3. You'll get plenty of bike there and you'll be able to sneakily upgrade bit by bit without the angel noticing...

The original poster was quoted €650 for the Defy 4 which is better than the 5. Might be worth asking where he got his quote.

€849 is list price for Defy 3 and most retailers are sticking to this (especially with BTW scheme).

Some retailers are giving up to 10% off list, especially if not going through BTW scheme. That appears to be the case in my (limited) experience.

I got a Defy3 in black and white last august in my lbs for 800 and it has been quality. I find it a quality bike and i have had no problems at all after putting up about 1500km since i bought it , just put a set of gator skins on for the winter as i found the tyres provided are not great in the bad weather.

Now im looking at the next parts to upgrade ....better hide the debit card

Isn't the 3/4/5 a bit on the heavy side?
