If a student fails an elective module in first semester of first year arts degree, what can a student do next?

I have researched and the consequences is a resit/repeat but if a students thinks that tht couldn't pass it on the second round or is there a wy of dropping it and taking another module?

If it's an elective yes you can substitute it I believe, but there is a charge and I'm not 100% sure what it is - maybe the standard resit fee of €230.

substituting is significantly more expensive than resitting if i rightly recall, not sure how much though.

Substitution is anywhere between 600 and 800ish depending on the course and module

Yes, you can drop it entirely and don't have to resist or repeat the module you failed. If you got an F and don't think you can pass it if you tried again, then that would be your only option really.

Don't worry though, first year is for finding what you like / don't like and what you're good at, so it wont count towards your degree, none of your subjects will until next year, you just need to earn the 60 credits to go into stage 2.

But there is a cost to doing this which is 500 euro

Of course, but if the OP doesn't see themselves passing a resit, then what other option do they have?

500 euro is an obscene amount of money to charge for an extra module though.
