The Further Education and Training Bill was passed today in the Dáil. Mr. Quinn assures us it's not a rebranding exercise. What are the likely changes for teachers and tutors in the sector? The training centre staff and 'others' will be transferred to the new ETBs. The ETB's ( consisting of 11 members appointed by the Minister) cannot have anyone serve on the board that has bankruptcy charges - might prove a little difficult these days :p ...

The VEC's should be having their last supper soon it seems.

Marks a very big change , but is it primarily a cost cutting and PR exercise ?
I would also think it washs away the sins of fas very nicely. Allows for reduction in staff and provides annual contracts. It will result in a loss of jobs in FE colleges.

Mmmm, so many questions for further ed teachers/tutors now.

If the FAS training centre's move to ETB's, who will line manage these programs? Are the ETB's essentially the newly amalgamated VEC's with FAS courses thrown into the fray. Aren't the FAS training centre's limited bodies with their own BOM's. How will all this variation in form and function co-exist.

Who are the other training providers the ETB's will deal with. Who will ensure these are reputable providers. If they are 'sub-contracted' providers, is that not repeating the mistakes of the past?

The calibre of the 11 ETB members will be particularly important on a regional basis. Will there be enough specialist 'educators' to nominate onto the boards.

There will be some obvious overlap in training provision. How will that be managed. What will happen to teachers not on CID's currently working in the VEC further Ed section - will they be forced to work under the old FAS contracts - or vice versa even.

There is a serious lack of information at this crucial stage. Managing the change and transformation of the sector will need the backing of the further ed staff - because the changes need to be implemented with vigor. I read somewhere before to persuade a resistant audience you must appeal to their thinking and KEEP THEM INFORMED. A news flash on a Friday evening is poor politics.

It sounds like a blow to teachers on VEC contracts in Adult Ed which ever way you look at it. Maybe SOLAS is actually FAS in a fancy dress costume!

Reminds me of that wooden horse yoke in Helen of Troy.
