Is there anything my sister can do in this situation?

I put my sister in touch with a training company I've been working with that are offering a course/work experience for graduates. She fulfills all of the requirements except that she hasn't been on the live register for more than a year. She's signed on in May 2012 and since then she has taken any temp employment she can get and has attended various course in order to increase her skillset. She is actively looking for work on a daily basis and look to better her education.

Today she went to the social welfare office to ask if she could do the course and they straight up said no. Is there anything she can do or anyone she could contact to take the matter to a higher level.. She really wants to do the course and is fairly down in the dumps after todays news...

I feel sorry for her and the many others out there that must be in the same boat. The social welfare office told her to do an internship, which if you ask me is becoming on of Irelands biggest con markets.. I've seen internships for floor staff in shops, receptionists etc. It's free employment for businesses that costs the state money.. Here's my sister trying to save the state money and she's told she's better off doing something thats going to cost the state money... makes no sense to me.

Not really. The scheme is aimed at the long-term unemployed (>1yr) for a reason and there is only x amount of places.

I understand that, by the time the course stars she'll be near enough 1 month away from being on the live register for a year and the course isn't full.. AFAIK they've yet to fill one of the courses (which I think is mad)...

She might be further away from claiming for a year if she was signing off days. To be claiming a year you must be 312 days on claim. Currently SW week is 6 days so 52X6 = 312 days. For each day signed off it will take longer to reach the 312 days.
Why not ask her to contact the Job Facilitator as they do have some discretion on these matters. As she obviously appears to be making a genuine effort to find work they may be able to help her. Good luck.
