Bought a house that was built some time in the early 1980's. It is a cavity block house. Its hard to heat and I had someone looking at it in terms of pumping the walls and he said it couldn't be done. My neighbour dry lined their house and it worked for them but I don't want to do that as I am only after painting and carpeting the house. Any recommendations?

They're right about pumping. The cavity block itself has too many thermal bridges to make it effective never mind the difficulty of actually pumping staggered cavity blocks.
If you don't want to undo the work done internally, then really you need externally insulate.

Another aspect that needs to be considered apart from the insulation is any draughts you may have in the house. All this insulating is no good if you've cold air getting into the house (which insulation doesn't stop in and of itself).

Have you got a budget for improving the house insulation-wise? I don't want to know the amount, just keen to know if you've set aside something to do this.

thanks for the reply. no i dont have a budget for anything else and not sure what to do as we are half way through winter. also i have a stove in the house which is heating the hole house on firweood which i get for free so i have to weigh up the cost benefits.

i spoke to a couple of people and they mentioned the outside insulation. what do you think (ball park) you would be talking for an average three bedroom semi d to insulate from the outside?

How old are the windows? Are they and any doors draughty?
