Manufacturers Warranty

    Hi
Looking at buying a car soon. Living in Mayo and we have seen a Fluence in Dublin that fits the bill. There is two years manufacturers warranty left and my question is whether we can drive into any Renault dealer to get something fixed under warranty or does it have to get fixed at the garage the car was purchased in?

If its manufacturer warranty, then yes you can take it anywhere. Just be sure that it is full factory warranty. I cant speak for the warranty on this car but some of the extended warranties, even when given with the car when new might have more terms and conditions than standard.

New renault dealer in ballinrobe too. Jj burke. I have to say that they were very helpful when viewing a peugeot car there from immediately presenting a car for a test drive to following up with a call back exactly at time promised.

Thanks. Was thinking of heading over to Burkes in B'Robe too to see what he has. Sounds like you'd recommend him.

With a manufacturer's warranty, the Irish distributor (importer) typically reimburses the dealer for the cost of parts and labour for a warranty claim so it doesn't matter in your case which Renault dealer you go to.

As stated above, with an extended warranty it's a different story as these are effectively insurance policies and you may be told which dealer to go to by the warranty company.

Just coming back to this thread with another question. I don't know a lot about cars...!!!

Basically I just want to know if a car needs a full dealers service history for the manufacturers warranty to be valid?

Made an enquiry about a car in a dealers in Dublin today.
It is advertised with just over 2 years manufacturers warranty left but when I rang the dealer he said it has a service history but not from the main dealer. He reckoned the manufacturers warranty was still valid.

Can someone here please clarify if this warranty should still be valid.

    Thanks

The car does not have to be serviced in a Renault garage to maintain the manufacturers warranty.

It must, however, be serviced as per the manufacturers guidelines at the correct intervals and using certified Original equipment quality parts.

How though can this be verified? Anyone can stamp it to say it's been serviced as per manufacturers guidelines??
Basically I'm wondering if I'm taking a risk buying a car like described in my last post?
Am I risking a Renault garage telling me to go take a hike if I need something repaired under warranty and they see that the car hasn't ever been serviced by them?

You would need full invoices for all services. You might also run into issues if some of the warranty is an add on warranty as these can have different conditions attached.
Manufacturer warranty stands as long as its serviced by the book but imo much less hassle to find one with Renault history as if they are looking for an excuse to not cover a fault, they can easily find one when car is serviced outside of dealer network.

Cheers. Going to give it a miss so. There are plenty more cars out there.

Any reputable garage will be giving you an itemised bill with oil specs and part numbers listed so the service history will be documented.

As you say, stamping the book alone means nothing.

I sold my mothers 10 fluence last may privately. We checked it out and once genuine parts and oils were used then warranty is transferable.

Where does non renault servicing sit with the extended 5 year warranty though?

Extended warranties are a different thing to standard manufacturer warranties.

Fir extended warranties the manufacturer/importer can make up whatever rules they want.

However, that may not be the case for long: http://www.autobiz.ie/print_news.php?slug=Swedish_Court_Says_KIA_Warranty_Is_Unlawful

KIA’s seven year warranty conditions have been deemed unlawful by a court in Sweden. Sveriges
Bildelsgrossisters Forening (SBF), the association which represents the automotive aftermarket parts
wholesalers in Sweden, has successfully taken the landmark case to the Market Court of Sweden.
SBF claimed KIA servicing restrictions contained within the KIA seven year warranty, which stated car owners
had to service their cars within the KIA authorised network, were against EU Block Exemption rules. KIA
counter claimed that these rules did not did not apply to them because they had less than the 30 percent market
share threshold required by BER. However, the Market Court said that the market is brand specific, which
therefore meant that KIA has more than 30% market share and cannot claim protection by referring to BER.
The Chairman of SBF, Chris Liljenberg, who has been fighting this case at great expense for over four years,
said “We at SBF are relieved and happy for all EU car owners and Independent Aftermarket operators who
today won an important victory against the car assemblers”.
Sylvia Gotzen, Secretary General of FIGIEFA, the International Association for Independent Parts Distributors
commented, “We know that our Swedish colleagues had a hard time with this case, and we would warmly
thank them for the relentless work they have been doing in the defence of freedom of repair within the entire
    aftermarket”
The case willsend out a clear message to vehicle manufacturers that BER rules cannot be ignored. However,
the Right 2 Repair Campaign organised by independent repairers and parts suppliers continues and all
automotive aftermarket independents are urged to support it to protect their future business interests.

Yes, but in answer to the question of a renault warranty, would a non dealer histo invalidate the last 2 or 3 years?

If its the remainder of the manufacturer warranty then it legally can;t be effected by where the car was serviced.

If its the remainder of an extended warranty then it can unless your willing to spend a lot of time and money fighting it.

We were told when we bought our fluence that the car had to be serviced by a renault garage in order to be covered with the extended 5 year warranty. (Could be an empty threat just to keep their servicing dep. in business?) Luckily we haven't had any warranty claims and our local garage has fixed priced servicing which has left servicing at a pretty reasonable price for us.
