System Airlocked

Hi All, I wish to drain my domestic water system to prevent flooding whilst away. I have done this before by1, shutting off the supply, draining the system via the Hot Water cylinder to try to prevent air locking or 2. just shutting off the system and drain via cold supply from tank in attic. Both times the bathroom Toilet Cystern and cold water to whb were airlocked, the first time I cleared by back flush with garden hose, the second time I had to "hard wire" the hose into the cold water supply to give it full pressure to clear. My question at last is: can I avoid airlocking when draining and is there an easier way to clear an airlock. Many thanks in advance guys.

There is no sure fire way to prevent an airlock in a gravity system after the system has been drained even the best designed systems can suffer an air lock on refill after draining. You could try turning the system back on in stages ie cold first then when that is up and running turn on the hot on.One of the easiest ways to clear an airlock is to force mains water up the hot side via a kitchen mixer tap then using a bath or basin mixer to force the hot side up the cold side if required
