As a city break for a few days:

    A few suggestions...

    Barcelona:
If your son into soccer, then a trip to the Nou Camp is a big deal.....even if he isnt, its a good thing to do. There are lots of events there, for example there is a big air show there in September where the whole city heads down to the beach and watches. Food is great, paella for example is a good family meal. Open top tour bus is very good. Lots of funky clothes stores and lots of pedestrian streets. Chocolate and churros bound to be a hit for breakfast.

    Berlin:
Surprisingly good food city. They are big into the brunch, which tends to be a two hour affair given the amount of stuff thats on offer. Would be a nice family thing to do each day.
I dont know how much your kids are into history, but visiting the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint CHarlie is of interest to most people. And complementing that, the Berlin Wall Museum is one that I'd say most kids would enjoy.....a lot of it is about the crazy stunts people did to go get out of the East......hiding in suit cases, making home made helicopters and so on....
One thing though, not the best city for walking around, although public transport is good.

San Sebastian has a good beaches, good party atmosphere, big pedestrian area....that could be good.

What you might consider for a week or ten days is a DIY inter-rail.....e.g. Prague, Krakow, Vienna and Budapest are all reasonably close.....stay 3 nights in each.

If you are looking for something more adventurous then Istanbul would be a whole new culture for them.

I'd avoid Paris/ Rome......you dont want to spend your time dragging them to museums/ historical sites.
