I bought my 1lt 2003 micra in May 2010 for €2,400 and since sold it on for €2k last week.

I'm finding it hard to get a nice 05/06 focus/octavia kinda car 1.4l max for 2-4k with at least 1 year NCT (Lot of cars for sale with no NCT), done deal & carsireland.ie seem to have a lot of overpriced cars i think, would anyone else disagree or is this the norm? I Jan a bad month too look?

Budget €2-4k would prefer a hatch with bigish boot for family reasons.

    Thanks

Done Deal search for 2005-2006 Ford Focus, petrol, manual, hatchback between €2000 and €4000 with NCT as the keyword found a few nice options - click here!

Pricing of a car is only dependent on supply and demand really.
Sellers wants to maximise profit and buyers wants to get a bargain, somewhere in between is your price :)
I find private sales on donedeal to be most "real", dealers often want crazy money.

Why I like adverts.ie is that you can see not only asking price but also the actual final price, something you don't see on any other site.
Donedeal cars may have 3000 as starting price, but finish on 2200 - you just don't know.

The cars you're looking at OP hold their value extremely well. Not many of these for under 4k

I'd suggest a Nissan Almera SVE. Plenty of spec and a boot for that price.

Try something less popular but even so your budgets too low €4 k doesn't. Buy much.car I am afraid renaults and the like are risky but in ur budget try 1st generation focus great car !

The first car i threw up with your criteria (1.6 a better car than 1.4, miniscule tax differences)

After 5 minutes, i see a massive amount of cars for your budget. At the lower end, in a car like a newer model focus, of course you're going to find the cars with questions hanging over them.

Maybe if you see a car you like with no nct for 2k, you could negotiate with the owner to run it in and see what it fails on. Then you know what your buying and can bid accordingly. But make sure and know what you are doing if this is the course you take.

You gets what you pays for;)

Dont even attempt to place one of these as a competitor to something like a focus. Thirsty and poor handling, and not a nice place to be:)

Its funny because the model before it was a reasonably good handling car.

You'd get a lovely mk1 focus facelift at the low end of your budget (again the 1.6 is a far superior car to the 1.4)

No bigger hatchback, plenty of choice, better 1.6 available too:)

Took me two & half years to do 9kmls in micra, I don't really need a 1.6, only drive kids to creche, village etc

Definately not a competitor. More of compromise :)

Take your point, but the saving in tax could be wiped out by repairs, the 1.6 octavia has a better engine.

As far as buying an almera as a 'compromise' why would you spend your hard earned on a vastly inferior product? I wouldnt see why you have to compromise. The OPs budget can buy a good example of a car that was good when new. Why buy any example of a car that was outclassed when new, and hasn't exactly blossomed with age?:)

You had E400 depreciation in 3 years on your current car, looks like the strong second hand market has served you pretty well tbh... :p

You compromise when you can't afford what you want.

If you want to buy a sports car but cant afford a Ferrari. What do you do?
    Compromise.

A 20 year old Lada Riva is vastly inferior. The Almera is not as good admittedly but hardly "vastly inferior"

ok i'm not too intrested in an almera at mo, what would you think of any of these?

scenic is being sold by trader & skoda has nct till 4/13 tax 2/13 both of whom say they have serviced the cars themselves?

I'm in the same position myself. I'm more geared towards getting a Focus due to its reliability and cheap repairs. I'd go with your first choice for a viewing, the Octavia has a too many miles on her and you could get 200 off the price going towards repairing the dent in the side door

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 801 ✭✭✭Wicklowandy

Id pick an octavia over the scenic, maybe not that one though, mileage slightly higher than average (not too much) but short test and lack of service history.

The one i linked earlier was a 1.4 and while slightly more expensive, looked a nice original car. But if the one you linked is not too far away from you, a look would do no harm. Theres no shortage of choice in these cars.

The scenic, while cheap on paper are not as good or spacious as they seem (its the small scenic, bigger one is called grande scenic)

would i be mad to go the scenic route as it's bad reputation ie, reliability & electrics? Should I trust anyone selling a car who said they serviced the car themselves?
