First time buying a car

    Hi all,

I'm buying a car for the first time and just need some advice on the transaction and what happens next (lets assume I know what to check for mechanically and all is in order).

Presumably I have to register the change in ownership somewhere and somehow - how do I do this and does the seller have to do anything too?

Do I need to inform the NCT people about a change in ownership of the car?

Other than sorting out insurance is there anything else I should be doing?

    Thanks all.

Regarding ownership, you fill in the log book with your details (name, address, phone, email etc.) sign it and the current owner / dealer is responsible for filling out his part and posting it to Shannon (Department of Transport) and the details will be changed over to your name. You'll receive your new log book within 2 weeks (hopefully).

Tax and NCT (if both already on the car and in date) don't need to be touched. When due, your tax renewal form will go to your registered address but NCT details will have to be registered / setup direct with the NCT Center when it's due and you'll get booking confirmation posted / text / email to you.

If there is no tax, you can enter your details on motortax.ie once Shannon update them (identical to log book) and request the PIN be emailed to you and then pay online (much much easier!). If there is no NCT - don't buy it or get dealer to do it first before purchasing, can't emphasise how important this is.

If possible, bring a mechanic and it's also advise to run the reg plate on Motorcheck.ie / Cartell.ie to verify mileage and crash / stolen / finance history if there's any.

Best of luck with the new car :)
