It dates between 1844 and 1924..given the severity of the fine i would say its the later end of this scale.

There are quite a lot of train and railway enthousiasts in this country and abroad so the chances are somebody would like to buy it from you..no idea on price..stick it up on Adverts.ie for 50 euro and see what happens.

Thanks for the info! I didn't think it was that old, I think I'll hang onto it now!

The amount of replicas of this particular type has ruined the market (knock-offs at most every car boot sale) but I think you have the real deal there judging by the bolt hole positions and the rust.

The bad news is, there were A LOT of these up and down the country (think of the number of farmers crossing gates on the GSWR, the largest company at the time) so I'd say 50-60 euro. There are rarer variants that would command more.

Whatever you do, DON'T clean it off and repaint, or if you feel the urge to paint it, don't clean off the back!
If it's too clean it'll be hard to tell if it's real or fake.

I found it in a pile of really old gates and scrap on a farm I use to work on,
It was bolted to one of the gates, so I'm guessing its real.

Probably the farm had a closed line running through it and the farmer either replaced them with new gates or (more likely) bulldozed the lot.

Those old iron gates were intended to give access if the land was split up by the railway.
